African American/African Descent Hair is the MOST fragile out of all the races because of our lovely curls, so it must be handled with the utmost care! Our Koily hair is very dry, porous and brittle, mainly because the natural oils have a hard time reaching the ends. The more curls the more fragile and the only thing that can combat dry hair is moisture! Moisture also stops the hair from breaking. Our hair thrives on moisture; our Koils will only flourish when they are well moisturized. African American hair produces more sebum as other hair types. Sebum is the natural oils that hair produces naturally to protect and lubricate our Koils. Almost anything can disturb the moisture balance of your Koils and draw all the moisture out. Extreme weather conditions, Synthetic products, and heat can upset the balance of the hair and make hair very dry, which will lead to breakage!
#1 Question Asked By Natural Women!
Why is my hair so dry?
Below are several causes of dry hair.
Do you hydrate your hair?? (hair steamer/DC with a plastic cap under the dryer)
How often do you wash your hair?
How often do you DC (deep condition) your hair?
Does your shampoo contain sulfates?
Does your products contain proteins?
Do you spray your hair with water or use water-based products?
Do you seal your hair with a butter or oil?
Are you drinking enough water?
AVOID products with drying alcohols
Hydration is essential to maintain healthy hair, whether it's natural or relaxed! The ONLY thing that can hydrate your hair is WATER!!! Oils and butters seal the moisture in! I recommend the Huetiful Hair Steamer helps overcome the variables that lead to dry hair. It does this by restoring moisture 5x better than deep conditioners alone. The Huetiful Hair Steamer achieves these great results by opening up the cuticles of your hair to allow the conditioner or hair treatment to be pulled deeply inside the hair shaft. While the hair cuticles are open, the Huetiful Hair Steamer bathes your hair with warm mist to replenish lost moisture. The Huetiful Hair Steamer works excellent with Koils by Nature's Hydrating Shealoe Creamy Conditioner.
Deep Conditioning is a formula designed to improve the health of your hair. Deep Conditioning really penetrates the hair shaft restoring vital vitamins and minerals to the hair. Either by putting a plastic cap on your hair and/or sitting under a hooded dryer. If you do not deep condition at least once a month, please start by deep conditioning 2x a month until you see your hair retaining moisture; once you see a difference in your hair you can cut back to once a month! Deep Conditioning is essential for retaining moisture!
Shampooing How often do you wash/shampoo your hair? Washing your hair too often with a sulfate shampoo will dry out, damage hair, causing breakage. is an Most shampoo contain Sodium lauryl sulfates and/or laureth sulfates are in dish washing liquids to CUT GREASE, so it will do the same for your hair; it will strip all the oils from your hair leaving it dry and brittle. Shampooing with sulfates is dehydrating for our curly locks and it is NOT necessary for cleansing our hair. Washing your hair with a hydrating conditioner, or Co-Washing is excellent for our hair; it will get rid of excess sweat and sebum. Co-washing will become your Curls best friend!
Proteins Hair is composed of strong structural protein called keratin. This is the same kind of protein that makes up the nails and the outer layer of skin. (Since your hair is 98% protein; unless you have color (which strips a layer of protein off so color can be deposited) you do not need a product that has protein to be added to your hair on a daily or weekly basis)
Protein once a month with deep conditioner could be sufficient (pay attention to your hair and find out what works for your hair) if you hair becomes hard and brittle you may want to stop using products with protein.
Additional protein could cause hair to become dry, brittle and breakage will occur.
Having a good balance of protein aids in moisture absorption and help your hair retain moisture.
Each strand of hair consists of three layers.
An innermost layer or medulla which is only present in large thick hairs.
The middle layer known as the cortex. The cortex provides strength and both the color and the texture of hair.
The outermost layer is known as the cuticle. The cuticle is thin and colorless and serves as a protector of the cortex.
Spraying Hair with Water/Using Water-Based Products Remember H2O is the only substance on earth that will add moisture to you hair! This means H2O or water-based products (water is the first ingredient on the list) will MOISTURIZE your hair! You MUST SEAL your hair once you've wet it or apply a water-based product; oils and butters creates barrier and forms a seal to lock in the moisture.
AVOID Drying Alcohols - Propylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol , Butylcarbamate
Conditioning Plant Based Alcohols - Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol
Increase Your Water Intake - Water is important for all metabolic processes in the body. It also helps with digestion and weight loss and improves the appearance of your skin. Drinking at least ½ your body weight in ounces of water each day is key to having healthy skin, hair and nails. Eating foods with high-water content (like fruits and vegetables) also will contribute to your water intake. Moisture starts from the inside!

What is pH?
pH - A scale that denotes how acidic or basic a substance is pH range 0-14. Pure water has a pH of 7.0 and is neither acidic nor basic.
Why is this important for my hair?
PH OF HAIR PRODUCTS: Alkaline (causes cuticle to raise open); Acid/Base (causes cuticle to seal shut). Both highly acidic and highly alkaline products can be extremely damaging to the hair cuticle. It is important to use pH balance hair products that are neither too alkaline nor too acidic. Your hair products should fall within a 4.5-5.5 pH range.
Benefits of products with pH range from 4.5-5.5.
Your hair will remain soft and flexible longer because the cuticle is sealed and prevents moisture from becoming observed into the air as quickly. When the cuticle is closed the hair is within its strongest possible state. When the cuticle in tightly sealed, it will reflex shine and movability. Strong, flexible hair is unlikely to break especially when compared to porous, brittle hair.
