The death toll from the catastrophic tornadoes in the South has climbed to more than 340, with thousands injured, homeless, without power or clean water. How can we harness the power of social media to help?
One of the best things you can do is use Twitter and Facebook to spread the word about places to donate and how to help. Here’s a list of ways to help get you started:
The Red Cross has two shelters set up in Tuscaloosa, temporary homes to 240 people so far. The relief organization provided meals for more than 600 people on Friday and is requesting more financial support. Donate to the Red Cross online RedCross.org, text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10, or call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) to give money or schedule a blood donation.
The Salvation Army has spread out all over the South, helping with sustenance for tornado survivors in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Donate on the Salvation Army’s website at salvationarmyusa.org. Text “GIVE” to 80888 to make a $10 donation, or you can call 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769) and designate “April 2011 Tornado Outbreak”.
Save the Children is providing food, doctors and education for kids, and the organization is accepting donations at the Save the Children website. The organization will also accept donations by phone at 800 728-3843 during business hours.
World Vision, a Christian humanitarian group, focuses on children, aiming to lessen the emotional shock from the devastating tornado outbreak. Find out more or donate at the World Vision website, or call 1-866-56-CHILD (24453).
Catholic Charities are accepting donations for tornado victims at the Catholic Charities website, or you can donate by calling 1-800-919-9338.
Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund is accepting donations on its website, requesting donations by credit card or check.
Post found items to Facebook: Patty Buillon started a Facebook page containing found pictures and items that were blown by the tornadoes. She started that page after finding pictures and documents in her neighborhood that were blown all the way from Smithville, Mississippi, a town located 100 miles to the Southwest of her home. If you live near the disaster area and find photos, mementos or other items, scan them or take photos of them and post them to the Facebook page she created specifically for this purpose, entitled “Pictures and Documents Found after the April 27, 2011 Tornadoes“. There are now more than 600 photos and items on the page, with 40 of them already identified.
Please, pick your favorite charity, let us know in the comments of other organizations that are helping the South’s tornado survivors, and post on Facebook and tweet the information of your choice far and wide. This is the second-worst storm in recorded history, and people are suffering right now. We need to help them.

April’s Newly Natural

Month 7- Chunky Twistout
How long have you been thinking about going natural? -Before I started my transition, I tried to go natural the summer before my transition but it didnt work out because I wasn’t serious enough about it. I just wanted something different and less damaging to my hair. After I started researching natural hair care, watched Youtube videos, and went to websites like Curlynikki then I seriously considered going natural!
When did you BC and after how long of a transition? -I BC’d August 7, 2010 after transitioning for 2 months during the summer.
How did you feel after all the relaxed hair was cut off?? -I felt free!! I went to my long time hairstylist to get my BC and then I went home and cut some more off because I still saw alot of relaxed ends. The fact that I completed my BC myself gave me strength and confidence in my new look!
What was your family’s reaction? -My family was in shock I think, they didn’t really say much about it. My mom did tell me “not to leave my hair standing on top of my head”, lol whatever that means. My fiance loved it, he supports me in anything that I do so I wasn’t surprised about his reaction.
Who, if any was your inspiration? -I don’t think I had a specific person who inspired me to go natural… but after watching YouTube videos of various women doing their BCs, transitioning, styling their natural hair, and sharing their natural hair experiences, that was enough inspiration for me to start my journey!
What products do you use? -My hair loves water, when my hair was relaxed I used to RUN from water, now I just let my tresses soak up that moisture! I really like Giovanni Smooth as Silk conditioner and VO5 Tea Tree Conditioner. My new fave is Koils By Nature Leave In Conditioner and Nourishing Body & Hair Butter in Mango. I’ve used Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Cream ever since my BC but Im trying out new things. I also love my spray bottle mix of water, tea tree oil, olive oil, rosemary oil, and peppermint oil- so refreshing in the morning.
If you have daughter(s) are they natural? - I don’t have any children. When I do have children, they will all be natural
What does it mean to you to a natural mother with daughter(s) -N/A
What have you learned from this experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life? -I have learned that Natural Hair is BEAUTIFUL! There’s no need to cover up the person that God has made me to be. I have also learned that what works for someone else may not work for me, so it’s important to always keep that in mind. Natural hair is sooo versatile, one day I can rock my TWA and the next I can rock a twistout. I love it!

Baltimore Natural HairCare Expo 2011
Women’s History Month
Our shared history unites families, communities, and nations. Although women’s history is intertwined with the history shared with men, several factors – social, religious, economic, and biological – have worked to create a unique sphere of women’s history.
The stories of women’s achievements are integral to the fabric of our history. Learning about women’s tenacity, courage, and creativity throughout the centuries is a tremendous source of strength. Until relatively recently, this sphere of women’s history was overlooked and undervalued. Women’s achievements were often distorted, disdained, and denied. But, knowing women’s stories provides essential role models for everyone. And role models are genuinely needed to face the extraordinary changes and unrelenting challenges of the 21st century.
While women’s history is a relatively new field of study, one important scholar is Gerda Lerner. She is credited with teaching the first women’s history course, establishing the first graduate program in women’s history, and publishing numerous books and treatises on women’s history. In recognition of Gerda Lerner’s pioneering role in establishing the field of women’s history as well as her generous role in mentoring women’s history scholars, the National Women’s History Project is honoring Gerda Lerner by offering her latest book Living with History/Making Social Change at a 30% DISCOUNT.
Gerda Lerner supported our work even before we were the National Women’s History Project. We will always be indebted to her not only for her tenacious, unrelenting, and pioneering work in the field of women’s history, but also for her well-documented research which demonstrates that Our History is Our Strength.

Starting Anew…My Hair Journey
Starting Anew! Big Chop 1/21/2011
On January 21, 2011, I was looking in the mirror at my hair and on the phone with my BFF Sharnia and telling her I wanted to cut all my hair off!! The day before I had hennaed my hair and did a deep conditioning avocado mask and attempted to do a satin braid out that my other friend Marci had posted on the Koils by Nature FanPage! When I took out the satin braid out I looked at my hair and was so disgusted!! My hair was growing so beautifully but the color patch that I got a few months back was breaking off so bad and it was about a 3-inch difference! I felt that there was no way my hair would grow back healthy! I was suppose to get my hair in Nubian twist by Ms Jameesha Moore the following day, but I could not get my hair braided knowing I had sever color damage! So while talking to Sharnia, I started cutting my hair…I said “no turning back now!” I went scissor happy and then went to the barbershop to get my hair shaped! I’ve had color in my hair before, relaxed and natural but this bleaching job was a bit much for my hair! I would color my hair again, but I would never bleach it!
I am really enjoying my new cut and I love the fact that I can use Koils by Nature from the root to the ends and I can really document my hair growth; I also know HOW to truly take care of my hair! When I did my big chop in Sept 07, (way before KBN) I was using Black Gel…and water!! I didn’t know how to care for my TWA! Now I can start right!! I am so excited…all the men in my life love it and my baby boy Kendall asked if my hair was, magic…LOL!
Here are so pictures of my hair before my color, with my fab color and the new me!!

I loved the color here too....but my hair didn't!!
Here are some pictures of my hair…

December 2009 I love the color!!!
I love this hair!!!!!

Natural Beauty of the Week
There is a rise in the number of women choosing to go natural and bravely doing the Big Chop (BC). The Big Chop (BC) is cutting all the relaxed hair off at one time, leaving only the natural hair; going to a barber is best, because they deal with natural hair on a regular basis. The big chop is the most significant step in the natural hair journey and a very brave way to start. Lots of women want to go natural, but they are afraid on how they may look if choosing to do the BC, its the fear of the unknown, how will people react? How will I react? Will my boyfriend or husband like me natural? That’s why doing the BC is not only physically changing your looks and body, but mentally it’s changing you and how you see yourself! For some it takes time and for others they embrace the new woman and hit the grown running! I am always asked about transitioning and the BC, and I tell women, you have to mentally prepare yourself for the BC, when you are ready nothing or no one will stop you! You will embrace and love the new REAL you! The beautiful person that has been hiding behind relaxers and weaves, the beautiful person that God created in His own image, if you were not in love with yourself before going natural…you will begin to fall in love with yourself…..it’s a beautiful journey and I am so glad I have beautiful women to share this ride with….. ~Meet Ms Caneesha~
First off CONGRATULATIONS on your new natural journey! How long have you been thinking about going natural? I only started to think about going natural long term over the past 6 months, I have always done it temporarily every year. Did/Do you have positive support on your journey? I have an awesome support system my husband is my #1 supporter and my Big sis Pam is my 911 emergency operator when i’m discouraged about my hair she always comes to my rescue. How did you feel after all the relaxed hair was cut off?? Cutting off my relaxer was no big deal because i’m not big on hair because i’m so diverse I love changing it up and chopping it off is nothing new for me LOL. What was your family’s reaction? My family is use to me doing this every year and have always be supportive Who, if any was your inspiration? My biggest inspiration was Pam Jenkins and the KBN users on FB and most of all my husband when I mentioned going natural for at least a year he was sooo enthused and told me how much he’d love it and how beautiful i’d be
What products do you use? I use KoilsbyNature products and I absolutely love’em
If you have daughter(s) are they natural? My daughter is not natural right now but maybe soon she’s 7 and is loving her long swaying hair LOL What does it mean to you to a natural mother with daughter(s) Being a natural mother with a daughter is awesome and i’m enjoying being a positive example and loving how i’m showing her there are other ways to be beautiful. What have you learned from this experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life? I have learned from this experience that my hair doesn’t make me relaxed or natural it’s my inner beauty that matters most…
Relaxed Caneesha!
Natural Beauty runs in teh family! Cannesha and her Mommy!
Caneesha getting the relaxer cut off!
Thankful

Living Out Your Dreams
My Dream 11/12/2009 Pamela by Pamela KoilsbyNature Jenkins on Tuesday, November♥ 13, 2009 at 10:44am I had the most powerful dream last night!!! I have never ever dreamed about God, even when I was going through what I thought were some of the worst moments in my life, when I was praying like no other. But last night, I dreamed about Him!! I was walking and not sure where I was, all I knew that it was dark and I kept walking, then I started to see light and felt warmth, as I moved closer to the warm light, a hand came down and a strong but soothing voice said “Trust Me!” I grab the hand and I felt safe, I felt filled with the spirit, I felt relief and I felt at peace! I am on a Spiritual High and love it! Trust and believe in Him!!! Love yall and this really happened to me last night![]()
Update 11/18/2010 This past Saturday, I celebrated my 1 year of leaving the government and pursuing Koils by Nature full time! What better way to celebrate this special day than at the Queen City Hair Affair presented by Natural Connections! I was so overwhelmed when I saw all the ladies waiting on Koils by Nature (I was 2 hours late….long story) if I wasn’t so tired I would have been crying the ugly cry! The love and admiration I felt was so amazing; I was thanking the Lord with every sale and praised the Lord at the end of the event!! I absolutely LOVE what I do. God has put this in my heart and He has not failed me! Anytime I have a tiny bit of feeling of doubt…God send someone to renew my faith in what I am doing! I have been so incredibly blessed this year and I know 2011 will be and even more AMAZING year! I am a living witness that when you live the dream God has put in your heart! He will move people, places, things and circumstances all to work in your favor! Having unwavering Faith in God is the first step…trust Him! remember that both fear and faith is believing in the unknown; faith is of God, fear is the enemy! My goal with Koils by Nature is to continue to provide you all with EXCELLENT products, customer service and content! I love & appreciate you all soooooo very much!!!! God Bless! Pamela Koilsbynature Jenkins

Here is my Hair Horror Story! In January of 2008; only for months after my BC, I deiced to get a sew in weave; I wanted my hair to grow and I just had a baby so I did not want to have to deal with my hair! I ordered my expensive Remy hair online; paid $200 to get it sew in so pretty! I took my hair out about 6 weeks later and this was the results!
Close Up..I didn't think myhair was going to grow back!
Left Side
The Front!
Wen out and bought a wig...i wore it for almost 4 months!
This experience is what really pushed me into making my own products! I did the research, found what herbs stimulate the scalp for hair growth, made my own oils, and rubbed my scalp with it every day! My edges have grown back, but they are still so fragile!
What is your hair Horror Story?
My hair today after 2 years worth of growth!
The herbs that will stimulate your scalp for hair growth are burdock root, rosemary, calendula, nettle & horsetail…I use these herbs in the Soothing Herbal Gel, Moisturizing Shealo Leave In Conditioner, Stimulating Hair Growth Rinse, Stimulating Hair Growth Serum and Pomades!

Hello Everyone, Yesterday, I woke up as I always do @ 0630 took my oldest son to school, came home fed my youngest son breakfast and took him to school; I got home looking at the number of orders that I had to package and ship out; took a deep breath sat down at my computer, checked my email, updated the Koils by Nature Fanpage on FB & Twitter and for one moment, I thought to myself, “do I need to get a “real job” is this what I am suppose to be doing with my life?” Now I do not have these thoughts often, but when I do….HE knows how to reassure me! As soon as that thought came into my mind, my Koils by Nature line rang, I answered, “Good morning this is Pamela!” and the person on the, other end was stumbling over her words, and I said “Hello!” and she said, “is this Pamela Jenkins? The owner of Koils by Nature?” I laughed a little and said ‘ Yes it is, how may I help you?”; she was taken aback that I answered the phone… she called to check on the status of her order, she was so excited about getting her products. I informed her that her products would be mailed today and then we started to talk….about everything for an hour and forty-five minutes!!! She told me that she LOVED Koils by Nature and what it has done for her! I knew this was God, He sent her to me to reassure me and my faith in what He has called me to do! I feel truly blessed when my customers email me, hit me up on FB and call me to let me know how much they LOVE KBN! I put love in everything that I do when it comes to KBN and I so bless that you all trust me with your hair and allow me to provide you with wonderful & affordable natural products! I am so thankful and grateful for each and every one of you! Especially you Maly, thank you for the wonderful conversation today! Thank you Sharnia, Nef, Marci, Gaye, Devorah, Tamara Wright, Nakeisha, Ayana (iHeartmyHair), Kizzy (Rockin My TWA) for being a SuperDuper Koils by Nature supporter! I appreciate you all so much! Love, peace, & blessings Pamela 10/29/2010

Koils by Nature Newly Natural of the Week 10-4
Meet Ms Rachelle BC’d 9/10/10
How long have you been thinking about going natural? I have thought about going natural for a very long time, but was fearful. I always thought that it was easier to have processed hair versus natural hair. I always loved how the women who were natural looked, just happy and carefree.
My family has always been about “hair”, how long the hair was, how good the hair was so it was a hard thing for them to hear. Others outside of the family encouraging and just as eager as I was to witness the aftermath…lol. When did you BC and after how long of a transition? I BC on 9/10/10 and I transitioned for about 2 months. It had gotten to a point where I could no longer stand the two different textures, at that point I knew it was time.
How did you feel after all the relaxed hair was cut off?? You know, I felt liberated in a sense. I felt free.
What was your family’s reaction? Ohhhh, My families reaction was one of un-certainty. My father was like “well, this ain’t the first time you did something I told you not todo.”; My sister was like she would just have to get used to it; My mother was like she too would have to get use to it; my sons of course didnt like it much at all as they were always use to seeing Mom with alot of hair. And My little little sisters were like.. “I dont like Sissys hair like that” and the other was like “I like Sissys hair, can I have my hair like that?” and of course my fathers response to that was “no, maybe when you are an adult.” My co-workers were excited as well as surprised as they didn’t think I would follow through.
Who, if any was your inspiration? My Aunt Nadine, Of course Pamela Jenkins
,Momma Rose and my sister in law Jonell Adams
What products do you use? I have been trying to find out what works right now. I have been using though to moisturize Coconut oil, unrefined as well as Shea Butter, also unrefined, apricot oil or motions oil moisturizer.
If you have daughter(s) are they natural? N/A What does it mean to you to a natural mother with daughter(s) N/A What have you learned from this experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life? I have learned that I am still beautiful whether I have alot of hair or alittle. My BC has not changed who I am inside. I actually feel that I am noticed more now than before.
Relaxed Rachelle
Did/Do you have positive support on your journey? When did you BC and after how long of a transition? I BC on 9/10/10 and I transitioned for about 2 months. It had gotten to a point where I could no longer stand the two different textures, at that point I knew it was time.

Koils by Nature Newly Natural of the Week 9-27
How long have you been thinking about going natural? I wanted to go natural for about two years. I tried transitioning once before with no luck. I got so caught up in the way other people thought about my looks that I gave up. But this time, I was determined. I decided that I would transition for about 6 months and then do my BC so that there would be no opportunity for me to turn back. After my 5th month, I just couldn’t handle it anymore. I took the scissors and chopped it off.
Did/Do you have positive support on your journey? Before I cut my hair off, I made up in my mind that I was doing this for ME. I didn’t care what ANYONE thought. Luckily everyone was very positive. I didn’t get any negative feedback from my loved ones so that made it so much easier. I thank God for Facebook groups like Koils by Nature and Rocking My TWA. If I get a little frustrated with my hair I have those groups to turn to. I also thank God for YouTube. The ladies that chronicle their hair journeys really inspire me.
When did you BC and after how long of a transition? I transitioned for 5 months and did my BC on August 20, 2010. That was one of the best days of my life.
How did you feel after all the relaxed hair was cut off?? I felt so liberated. So beautiful. So REAL. So Natural. I felt like I was PRETTIER than any video vixen or model because I was REAL. I no longer need weaves or relaxers to make me beautiful. I am beautiful naturally.
What was your family’s reaction? My husband didn’t really like it at first. We went out the night of my BC. As we were walking on the waterfront it started to rain. I didn’t have to run back to the car or get an umbrella because my hair could get wet and STILL look good. So we continued to walk, not letting the rain ruin our evening. He said he LOVED that and asked that I just let him get used to it. Now, we watch YouTube videos together and I talk to him about my hair like he’s one of my girlfriends. He is so supportive and I love him for that.
Who, if any was your inspiration? I was my inspiration. I love myself too much to allow chemicals to damage my hair. I want to be a healthy woman and that includes my hair.
What products do you use? I wash and condition my hair with Suave all natural Shampoo and Conditioner. It has almond and shea butter in it. I recently started using Koils By Nature products. I’m in love with the hair & body butter and the gel. My barber does a deep condition in my hair about once a month with Redkin products. My hair is super soft after that. I also take a multi vitamin everyday and drink LOTS of water.
If you have daughter(s) are they natural? I have a son with more hair than any woman I know. His hair is natural.
What does it mean to you to a natural mother with daughter(s) I decided to take care of his hair the way I take care of mine. I will not use any products with alcohol on his hair and I keep it moisturized. His hair is thick and healthy, they way I want mine to be.
What have you learned from this experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life? I learned to love myself by watching what I use in my hair and taking care of my hair and body. I learned that I am so much more beautiful without weave and perms. I learned to care less about what other people think. A lot of people are simple minded and don’t care to learn about natural hair before jumping to a conclusion about it. But I don’t and I won’t let anyone EVER tell me that I made the wrong decision. “ My hair is nappy, but my life is straight!” -Tamara WrightBeautiful Relaxed Tamara!

Is Your Hair Dry??
African American Hair is the MOST fragile out of all the races because of our lovely curls, so it must be handled with the utmost care! Our Koily hair is very dry, porous and brittle, mainly because the natural oils have a hard time reaching the ends. The more curls the more fragile and the only thing that can combat dry hair is moisture! Moisture also stops the hair from breaking. Our hair thrives on moisture; our Koils will only flourish when they are well moisturized. African American hair produces more sebum as other hair types. Sebum is the natural oils that hair produces naturally to protect and lubricate our Koils. Almost anything can disturb the moisture balance of your Koils and draw all the moisture out. Extreme weather conditions, Synthetic products, and heat can upset the balance of the hair and make hair very dry, which will lead to breakage!
I am asked by many women, how to combat dry hair??? When I am asked this question, I always ask them the following questions:- ARE YOU DRINKING ENOUGH WATER!!
- How often do you wash your hair?
- Does your shampoo contain sulfates?
- How often do you DC (deep condition) your hair?
- Does your conditioner contain proteins?
- Do you spray your hair with water?
- Water is the ONLY thing that can properly moisturize our hair and body! You should be drinking at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces, so if you’re 160lbs you should drink at least 80oz of water a day! Water assists in the flushing or removal of harmful toxins from the body. If the body does not have sufficient water, then metabolic wastes will not be removed as efficiently as they should. In essence, the body would be holding in toxins instead of expelling them as is required for proper health. Much of this toxin removal is performed in the kidneys. Therefore, the benefit of drinking water in this case is to allow the kidneys to perform their task properly. Another benefit of drinking water is to carry nutrients into the cells of the body. In addition to helping nutrients get into the cells where they are needed, the benefit of drinking water in adequate amounts also helps to keep the cells well hydrated so they can function properly and efficiently.
- How often do you wash your hair? Washing your hair too often with a sulfate shampoo will dry out, damage hair, causing breakage. Sodium lauryl sulfates or laureth sulfates are found in dish washing liquid and its main purpose is to cut grease; that is will do to your hair…..cut and remove all the natural oils & amino acids your hair needs to stay moisturized; the results are dull dry hair!
- Deep Conditioning is a formula designed to improve the health of your hair. Deep Conditioning really penetrates the hair shaft restoring vital vitamins and minerals to the hair. Either by putting a plastic cap on your hair and/or sitting under a hooded dryer. If you do not deep condition at least once a month, please start by deep conditioning 2x a month until you see your hair retaining moisture; once you see a difference in you hair you can cut back to once a month! Deep Conditioning is essential for retaining moisture!
Old Skool DC
1 Cup of Mayo
1 Egg (excellent protein treatment)
1 tsp of Olive Oil
1 tsp of Macadamia Nut oil (or grapeseed, almond, jojoba)
1 tbsp of honey
Easy Hair Conditioning Mask
1 very ripe Avocado pitted
1 Egg (excellent protein treatment)
1 tsp of Olive Oil
1 tsp of Macadamia Nut oil (or grapeseed, almond, jojoba, evoo)
1 tbsp of honey
Leave on hair for 30 minutes or longer with a plastic cap or a hooded dryer.
4. Since hair is protein, a diet that is too low in protein may cause some thinning in hair or retardation in the growth cycle. Some conditioners contain proteins; when too much protein is put on the hair, either every week or every two weeks it can leave the hair very hard and brittle. Try to limited protein to the hair at least once a month. Especially if your diet is rich in proteins!
5. Having a Spray bottles is essential of natural hair! It is beneficial to add water to your hair before styling. Water (moisture) keeps your hair flexible for styling and it will not break easily and hair can reach it’s maximum length.
Simple Spritz Recipe1 – 6-8 oz spray bottle
4 – 6 oz of distilled or purified water (please do not use tap water)
¼ cup of aloe vera juice or gel
1 tbsp of your favorite oil (grapeseed, almond, jojoba, evoo, Macadamia Nut oil)
5-10 – drops of essential oil of your choice
(if your hair like glycerin you can also add it)
Oils Excellent for Moisturizing HairExtra Virgin Olive Oil this rich green moderately heavy base oil with a strong aroma is derived from the first pressing of the ripe olives and is high beneficial vitamins and minerals. Olive oil is excellent condition oil for dry hair.
Macadamia Nut Oil light medium textured, penatrating oil is high in monosaturated fatty acids; excellent for Kinky Koily Hair. The chemical makeup closely resembles the sebum produces naturally by the scalp and will penetrate the hair shaft adding great moisture to your hair and skin.
Grapeseed oil is popular because it is odorless and full of minerals and vitamins that help strengthen your hair. It is odorless oil, and can help add shine and moisture to your hair. Grapeseed oil is known for having a high content of linoleic acid, is an unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid that supports cell health. Grapeseed oil is also excellent for protecting the hair against high heat!
