Dry Hair?? I Can Help!
Summer Time Hair
Please ensure you drink plenty of water, hydrate your hair from the inside and the out! For Natural Beauties….a spray bottle is a MUST have! You can put purified/distilled water, any carrier oil of your choice, evoo (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), avocado oil (rich in vitamins and beta carotene), sweet almond and grapeseed oils are also EXCELLENT oils, aloe vera juice or gel, a touch of glycerin or honey (humectants – be careful during the winter months low dew points) Hats, Scarves & protective styles are your friend during the summer months! The sun rays can be pleasurable for your body, buy reach havoc on your hair!
Humectants are used to attract, hold and retain moisture, optimizing the hair’s resilience, suppleness, and elasticity. Through their moisture absorbing properties, the give hair body and feeling of fullness. Humectants also prevent products from drying out. Natural humectants include vegetable glycerin, sorbitol and honey.
Do you have dry hair???
African American Hair is the MOST fragile out of all the races because of our lovely curls, so it must be handled with the utmost care! Our Oily hair is very dry, porous and brittle, mainly because the natural oils have a hard time reaching the ends. The more curls the more fragile and the only thing that can combat dry hair is moisture! Moisture also stops the hair from breaking. Our hair thrives on moisture; our Koils will only flourish when they are well moisturized. African American hair produces more sebum as other hair types. Sebum is the natural oils that hair produces naturally to protect and lubricate our Koils. Almost anything can disturb the moisture balance of your Koils and draw all the moisture out. Extreme weather conditions, Synthetic products, and heat can upset the balance of the hair and make hair very dry, which will lead to breakage!
I am asked by many women, how to combat dry hair??? When I am asked this question, I always ask the following questions:
- Do you hydrate your hair?? (hair steamer/DC with a plastic cap under the dryer)
- How often do you wash your hair?
- How often do you DC (deep condition) your hair?
- Does your shampoo contain sulfates?
- Do your products contain proteins?
- Do you spray your hair with water or use water-based products?
- Do you seal your hair with a butter or oil?
- Are you drinking enough water?
- AVOID products with drying alcohols
- More protective styles – less Wash-n-Go’s for the winter months
Everything listed above can lead to dry hair!
- Hydration is essential to maintain healthy hair, whether it’s natural or relaxed! The ONLY thing that can hydrate your hair is WATER!!! Oils and butters seal the moisture in! I recommend the Huetiful Hair Steamer helps overcome the variables that lead to dry hair. It does this by restoring moisture 5x better than deep conditioners alone. The Huetiful Hair Steamer achieves these great results by opening up the cuticles of your hair to allow the conditioner or hair treatment to be pulled deeply inside the hair shaft. While the hair cuticles are open, the Huetiful Hair Steamer bathes your hair with warm mist to replenish lost moisture. The Huetiful Hair Steamer works excellent with Koils by Nature’s Hydrating Shealoe Creamy Conditioner. But just don’t take it from us. Watch these testimonials from others who have used the Huetiful Hair Steamer.
- Deep Conditioning is a formula designed to improve the health of your hair. Deep Conditioning really penetrates the hair shaft restoring vital vitamins and minerals to the hair. Either by putting a plastic cap on your hair and/or sitting under a hooded dryer. If you do not deep condition at least once a month, please start by deep conditioning 2x a month until you see your hair retaining moisture; once you see a difference in your hair you can cut back to once a month! Deep Conditioning is essential for retaining moisture!
- Shampooing How often do you wash your hair? Washing your hair too often with a sulfate shampoo will dry out, damage hair, causing breakage. is an Most shampoo contain Sodium lauryl sulfates and/or laureth sulfates are in dish washing liquids to CUT GREASE, so it will do the same for your hair; it will strip all the oils from your hair leaving it dry and brittle. Shampooing is dehydrating for our curly locks and it is NOT necessary for cleansing our hair. Washing your hair with a hydrating conditioner, or Co-Washing is excellent for our hair; it will get rid of excess sweat and sebum. Co-washing will become your Curls best friend!
- Proteins Hair is composed of strong structural protein called keratin. This is the same kind of protein that makes up the nails and the outer layer of skin. (Since your hair is 98% protein; unless you have color (which strips a layer of protein off so color can be deposited) you do not need a product that has protein to be added to your hair on a daily or weekly basis)
- Protein once a month with deep conditioner could be sufficient (pay attention to your hair and find out what works for your hair)
- Additional protein could cause hair to become dry, brittle and breakage will occur.
- Having a good balance of protein aids in moisture absorption and help your hair retain moisture.
- Each strand of hair consists of three layers.
- An innermost layer or medulla which is only present in large thick hairs.
- The middle layer known as the cortex. The cortex provides strength and boththe color and the texture of hair.
- The outermost layer is known as the cuticle. The cuticle is thin andcolorless and serves as a protector of the cortex.
- Spraying Hair with Water/Using Water-Based Products remember H2O is the only substance on earth that will add moisture to you hair! This means H2O or water-based products (water is the first ingredient on the list) will MOISTURIZE your hair! You MUST SEAL your hair once you’ve wet it or apply a water-based product; oils and butters creates barrier and forms a seal to lock in the moisture.
- AVOID DRYING ALOCOHOLS - Propylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol , Butylcarbamate
- Good Conditioning Alcohols – Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol
- *Remember to protect your hair at night…a satin scarf, bonnet, pillow case are all your friends!

4. Since hair is protein, a diet that is too low in protein may cause some thinning in hair or retardation in the growth cycle. Some conditioners contain proteins; when too much protein is put on the hair, either every week or every two weeks it can leave the hair very hard and brittle. Try to limited protein to the hair at least once a month. Especially if your diet is rich in proteins!
5. Having a Spray bottles is essential of natural hair! It is beneficial to add water to your hair before styling. Water (moisture) keeps your hair flexible for styling and it will not break easily and hair can reach its maximum length.

*Promoting Hair Growth & Healthy Lifestyle Simultaneously*
- Having a healthy diet is a key factor to stopping hair loss and promoting hair growth. Depending on your schedule it may be tough to adhere to some of these standards, but most are easily followed once you make a conscious decision to stick to the plan. Some key dietary points to note:
- Eat a solid amount of fresh fruits and vegetables everyday. Leafy greens (e.g. lettuce) and sweet juicy fruits (e.g. melons) are especially good, and fruits that are ripe are easier to digest.
- Evergreen WheatGrass is a perfect source for your leafy green vegetables in 2 hots a day!! http://www.evergreenjuices.com/
- Be sure to consume an adequate amount of protein everyday. Protein is required for all cells in the body to grow, including hair cells. Lean proteins and low-fat milk or yogurt are best, as they are easier to digest. Animal proteins (i.e. dairy, meat, seafood) are especially beneficial because they are complete proteins, in that they contain the eight essential amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own, but are required for protein synthesis and muscle growth. Proteins are also a good source of B-vitamins and zinc.
- Eat several servings of whole grains everyday. They are easy to digest and also contain biotin, silica and iron, which are essential to maintaining healthy hair. Brown rice and lentils are great options, and are also easy to incorporate into one’s diet.
- Try to incorporate seeds and nuts into your diet. They can be eaten as a snack or with a meal. Seeds and nuts (e.g. walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds) provide essential fatty acids which are vital for promoting hair growth.
- Include spices in your meals. Spices help the body to absorb the nutrients from the foods that you eat. These nutrients are essential for promoting hair growth. Some everyday options include parsley, oregano and black pepper.
- Cut down on processed foods. These foods usually do not contain much in the way of nutritional value, and they also contain additives, which help give it a long shelf-life but can have a negative impact on the body.
- Have a multi-vitamin and a time-release Vitamin C tablet everyday. A daily multi-vitamin is important because even with a great diet, it is hard for the body to receive all the vitamins and minerals that it needs in order to promote hair growth. Vitamin C helps the body to repair the small muscle tears that occur when you exercise (which is also a key part of my program). If the body has to worry about repairing muscle tears, it cannot concentrate on growing hair.
- Stay hydrated. Be sure to drink enough water to keep the body replenished, but sipping water every fifteen minutes is unnecessary. Eight to ten glasses of water a day is a good target to keep the body hydrated. Please keep in mind that fruits and vegetables are largely composed of water, and can also be used to reach the recommended hydration level.
- Exercise is just as important as a healthy diet when it comes to growing your hair back. Exercise helps to reduce stress, which often contributes to hair loss. Increased stress levels constrict the blood vessels which supply blood to the scalp. If the blood flow in the scalp area is insufficient, the scalp cannot receive the nutrients that it needs in order to promote hair growth. Some important points to remember:
- Don’t stress out. Constantly thinking about losing your hair is stressful and will only cause you to lose more hair. Instead, focus on what you can do to stop the hair loss and direct your energy towards improving your lifestyle.
- Create a tri-weekly weightlifting routine. There are a couple of essential exercises which should be incorporated into your routine. Crunches help to make the body’s core strong and will help you to perform all other exercises with proper form. Squats work some of the body’s largest muscle groups and help to release a large amount of growth hormone, which helps all the muscles that you exercise to grow. Lifting weights also releases endorphins, which help to put you in a positive state of mind. The endorphins are very helpful when trying to deal with something that seems impossible to change, such as hair loss.
- Practice yoga twice a week. Yoga classes are offered at most health clubs and there are also a number of very good DVDs in circulation. A comprehensive yoga session will take you through a variety of poses that workout the entire body. Yoga helps to put you in a more relaxed state of mind, and also makes the body’s muscles more flexible.
- Try to do some form of aerobic exercise twice a week (e.g. running, treadmill). Aerobic exercises also help the body to release endorphins.
- Always breathe deeply. Deep breathing purifies the blood and helps it to carry nutrients and oxygen to the cells of the scalp, which in turn help to promote hair growth. Breathing deeply is also a great stress reliever.
- Get an adequate amount of sleep. As someone who often works eighty hour weeks, I know that getting six to eight hours of sleep per night can be almost impossible. If you don’t have enough time to get that much sleep everyday, ensure that whatever sleep you do get is in a comfortable environment. Sleep is a great stress reliever and also helps to clear the mind.

7 Tips to Healthy Hair!!
Here are 7 Tips to Healthy Hair, there is more of course, but this is a great start!
- Stress Free Life – excess stress and worry can cause hair loss. Exercising, meditation/praying and taking a long walks can all help relieve stress!
- Rinse with Cool Water – Always rinse conditioner with cool or cold water. The cool/cold water will tighten the cuticle & pores and enhance shine of your curly locks.
- Get A Trim – Split ends will only split more if left untreated. Make sure you get a trim every 8 -12 weeks; regular trims will prevent frizz, split and frayed ends.
- Cover Up – wear a hat to protect your hair from the drying, color altering sunlight! Make sure your hair products contain Vitamin E, a natural sunscreen.
- Minimize High Heat – Blow-drying hair at high temperatures will literally fry your hair. If you must blow dry your hair, ensure your blow dryer is set at low heat, or cool setting.Keep curling irons & flat iron of the hair to a minimum. Heat ruins the health of the cuticle.
- STOP Shampooing Your Hair – Most shampoo contain sulfates and sulfates are in dish washing liquids to CUT GREASE, so it will do the same for your hair; it will strip all the precious oils from your hair leaving it dry and brittle. Shampooing is dehydrating for our curly locs and it is NOT necessary for cleansing our hair. Washing your hair with a hydrating conditioner, or Co-Washing is excellent for our hair; it will get rid of excess sweat and sebum. Co-washing will become your best friend!
- Balanced Diet – What you put in your body will show in your hair & skin! Make sure you drink lots of water and include protein and biotin in your diet, iron, iodine , vitamin b12 and omega-3 fatty acids are all excellent from healthy skin and hair!
Peace & Blessings
