Do You Know Your Status???

March 10 – National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

HIV/AIDS is a serious public health issue affecting nearly 280,000 women in the United States.1 While men account for most HIV/AIDS cases, the impact on women is growing. In addition, research shows that, when compared to men, women face gaps in access and care.

The new Affordable Care Act and National HIV/AIDS Strategy will help change that. The new law prohibits all insurance plans from putting lifetime caps on the dollar amount that they will spend on benefits. In the past, patients with HIV/AIDS, cancer, or other chronic diseases ran the risk of hitting a lifetime cap and losing access to care. The law also restricts most insurance companies’ use of low annual dollar limits on benefits. In 2014, annual limits will be eliminated. In addition, the Affordable Care Act will help those living with HIV/AIDS be better able to afford their medications. The National HIV/AIDS Strategy will help:

* Reduce the number of people who become infected with HIV * Increase access to care and optimize health outcomes for people living with HIV * Reduce HIV-related health disparities

  1. Do you know your status?
  2. Do you get tested? If yes, how often. If no, why not?
  3. Do you know someone living with HIV/AIDS?

Women’s History Month

Koils by Nature will be Honoring Women for the Month of March 2011 Theme – Our History is Our Strength

Our shared history unites families, communities, and nations.  Although women’s history is intertwined with the history shared with men, several factors – social, religious, economic, and biological – have worked to create a unique sphere of women’s history.

The stories of women’s achievements are integral to the fabric of our history.  Learning about women’s tenacity, courage, and creativity throughout the centuries is a tremendous source of strength.  Until relatively recently, this sphere of women’s history was overlooked and undervalued. Women’s achievements were often distorted, disdained, and denied.  But, knowing women’s stories provides essential role models for everyone. And role models are genuinely needed to face the extraordinary changes and unrelenting challenges of the 21st century.

While women’s history is a relatively new field of study, one important scholar is Gerda Lerner. She is credited with teaching the first women’s history course, establishing the first graduate program in women’s history, and publishing numerous books and treatises on women’s history. In recognition of Gerda Lerner’s  pioneering role in establishing the field of women’s history as well as her generous role in mentoring women’s history scholars, the National Women’s History Project is honoring Gerda Lerner by offering her latest book Living with History/Making Social Change at a 30% DISCOUNT.

Gerda Lerner supported our work even before we were the National Women’s History Project.  We will always be indebted to her not only for her tenacious, unrelenting, and pioneering work in the field of women’s history, but also for her well-documented research which demonstrates that Our History is Our Strength.

Willie Lynch Mindset 1772 – 2011

Do you have a Willie Lynch Mindset??? Some of us still have this mindset…….read please, read and FREE YOURSELF!!! Here is the infamous Willie Lynch Letter written in 1772 The makings of a Slave!

Greetings,

Gentlemen. I greet you here on the bank of the James River in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twelve. First, I shall thank you, the gentlemen of the Colony of Virginia, for bringing me here. I am here to help you solve some of your problems with slaves. Your invitation reached me on my modest plantation in the West Indies, where I have experimented with some of the newest, and still the oldest, methods for control of slaves. Ancient Rome would envy us if my program is implemented. As our boat sailed south on the James River, named for our illustrious King, whose version of the Bible we cherish, I saw enough to know that your problem is not unique. While Rome used cords of wood as crosses for standing human bodies along its highways in great numbers, you are here using the tree and the rope on occasions. I caught the whiff of a dead slave hanging from a tree, a couple miles back. You are not only losing valuable stock by hangings, you are having uprisings, slaves are running away, your crops are sometimes left in the fields too long for maximum profit, you suffer occasional fires, your animals are killed. Gentlemen, you know what your problems are; I do not need to elaborate. I am not here to enumerate your problems, I am here to introduce you to a method of solving them. In my bag here, I HAVE A FULL PROOF METHOD FOR CONTROLLING YOUR BLACK SLAVES. I guarantee every one of you that, if installed correctly, IT WILL CONTROL THE SLAVES FOR AT LEAST 300 HUNDREDS YEARS. My method is simple. Any member of your family or your overseer can use it. I HAVE OUTLINED A NUMBER OF DIFFERENCES AMONG THE SLAVES; AND I TAKE THESE DIFFERENCES AND MAKE THEM BIGGER. I USE FEAR, DISTRUST AND ENVY FOR CONTROL PURPOSES. These methods have worked on my modest plantation in the West Indies and it will work throughout the South. Take this simple little list of differences and think about them. On top of my list is “AGE,” but it’s there only because it starts with an “a.” The second is “COLOR” or shade. There is INTELLIGENCE, SIZE, SEX, SIZES OF PLANTATIONS, STATUS on plantations, ATTITUDE of owners, whether the slaves live in the valley, on a hill, East, West, North, South, have fine hair, course hair, or is tall or short. Now that you have a list of differences, I shall give you an outline of action, but before that, I shall assure you that DISTRUST IS STRONGER THAN TRUST AND ENVY STRONGER THAN ADULATION, RESPECT OR ADMIRATION. The Black slaves after receiving this indoctrination shall carry on and will become self-refueling and self-generating for HUNDREDS of years, maybe THOUSANDS. Don’t forget, you must pitch the OLD black male vs. the YOUNG black male, and the YOUNG black male against the OLD black male. You must use the DARK skin slaves vs. the LIGHT skin slaves, and the LIGHT skin slaves vs. the DARK skin slaves. You must use the FEMALE vs. the MALE, and the MALE vs. the FEMALE. You must also have white servants and overseers [who] distrust all Blacks. But it is NECESSARY THAT YOUR SLAVES TRUST AND DEPEND ON US. THEY MUST LOVE, RESPECT AND TRUST ONLY US. Gentlemen, these kits are your keys to control. Use them. Have your wives and children use them, never miss an opportunity. IF USED INTENSELY FOR ONE YEAR, THE SLAVES THEMSELVES WILL REMAIN PERPETUALLY DISTRUSTFUL. Thank you gentlemen.”

LET’S MAKE A SLAVE

It was the interest and business of slave holders to study human nature, and the slave nature in particular, with a view to practical results. I and many of them attained astonishing proficiency in this direction. They had to deal not with earth, wood and stone, but with men and, by every regard, they had for their own safety and prosperity they needed to know the material on which they were to work, conscious of the injustice and wrong they were every hour perpetuating and knowing what they themselves would do. Were they the victims of such wrongs? They were constantly looking for the first signs of the dreaded retribution. They watched therefore with skilled and practiced eyes, and learned to read with great accuracy, the state of mind and heart of the slave, through his sable face. Unusual sobriety, apparent abstractions, sullenness and indifference indeed, any mood out of the common was afforded ground for suspicion and inquiry. Frederick Douglas LET’S MAKE A SLAVE is a study of the scientific process of man-breaking and slave-making. It describes the rationale and results of the Anglo Saxons’ ideas and methods of insuring the master/slave relationship. LET’S MAKE A SLAVE “The Original and Development of a Social Being Called ‘The Negro.’” Let us make a slave. What do we need? First of all, we need a black nigger man, a pregnant nigger woman and her baby nigger boy. Second, we will use the same basic principle that we use in breaking a horse, combined with some more sustaining factors. What we do with horses is that we break them from one form of life to another; that is, we reduce them from their natural state in nature. Whereas nature provides them with the natural capacity to take care of their offspring, we break that natural string of independence from them and thereby create a dependency status, so that we may be able to get from them useful production for our business and pleasure.

CARDINAL PRINCIPLES FOR MAKING A NEGRO

For fear that our future generations may not understand the principles of breaking both of the beast together, the nigger and the horse. We understand that short range planning economics results in periodic economic chaos; so that to avoid turmoil in the economy, it requires us to have breadth and depth in long range comprehensive planning, articulating both skill sharp perceptions. We lay down the following principles for long range comprehensive economic planning. Both horse and niggers [are] no good to the economy in the wild or natural state. Both must be BROKEN and TIED together for orderly production. For orderly future, special and particular attention must be paid to the FEMALE and the YOUNGEST offspring. Both must be CROSSBRED to produce a variety and division of labor. Both must be taught to respond to a peculiar new LANGUAGE. Psychological and physical instruction of CONTAINMENT must be created for both. We hold the six cardinal principles as truth to be self-evident, based upon following the discourse concerning the economics of breaking and tying the horse and the nigger together, all inclusive of the six principles laid down above. NOTE: Neither principle alone will suffice for good economics. All principles must be employed for orderly good of the nation. Accordingly, both a wild horse and a wild or natur[al] nigger is dangerous even if captured, for they will have the tendency to seek their customary freedom and, in doing so, might kill you in your sleep. You cannot rest. They sleep while you are awake, and are awake while you are asleep. They are DANGEROUS near the family house and it requires too much labor to watch them away from the house. Above all, you cannot get them to work in this natural state. Hence, both the horse and the nigger must be broken; that is breaking them from one form of mental life to another. KEEP THE BODY, TAKE THE MIND! In other words, break the will to resist. Now the breaking process is the same for both the horse and the nigger, only slightly varying in degrees. But, as we said before, there is an art in long range economic planning. YOU MUST KEEP YOUR EYE AND THOUGHTS ON THE FEMALE and the OFFSPRING of the horse and the nigger. A brief discourse in offspring development will shed light on the key to sound economic principles. Pay little attention to the generation of original breaking, but CONCENTRATE ON FUTURE GENERATION. Therefore, if you break the FEMALE mother, she will BREAK the offspring in its early years of development; and when the offspring is old enough to work, she will deliver it up to you, for her normal female protective tendencies will have been lost in the original breaking process. For example, take the case of the wild stud horse, a female horse and an already infant horse and compare the breaking process with two captured nigger males in their natural state, a pregnant nigger woman with her infant offspring. Take the stud horse, break him for limited containment. Completely break the female horse until she becomes very gentle, whereas you or anybody can ride her in her comfort. Breed the mare and the stud until you have the desired offspring. Then, you can turn the stud to freedom until you need him again. Train the female horse whereby she will eat out of your hand, and she will in turn train the infant horse to eat out of your hand, also. When it comes to breaking the uncivilized nigger, use the same process, but vary the degree and step up the pressure, so as to do a complete reversal of the mind. Take the meanest and most restless nigger, strip him of his clothes in front of the remaining male niggers, the female, and the nigger infant, tar and feather him, tie each leg to a different horse faced in opposite directions, set him afire and beat both horses to pull him apart in front of the remaining niggers. The next step is to take a bullwhip and beat the remaining nigger males to the point of death, in front of the female and the infant. Don’t kill him, but PUT THE FEAR OF GOD IN HIM, for he can be useful for future breeding.

THE BREAKING PROCESS OF THE AFRICAN WOMAN

Take the female and run a series of tests on her to see if she will submit to your desires willingly. Test her in every way, because she is the most important factor for good economics. If she shows any sign of resistance in submitting completely to your will, do not hesitate to use the bullwhip on her to extract that last bit of [b----] out of her. Take care not to kill her, for in doing so, you spoil good economics. When in complete submission, she will train her offsprings in the early years to submit to labor when they become of age. Understanding is the best thing. Therefore, we shall go deeper into this area of the subject matter concerning what we have produced here in this breaking process of the female nigger. We have reversed the relationship; in her natural uncivilized state, she would have a strong dependency on the uncivilized nigger male, and she would have a limited protective tendency toward her independent male offspring and would raise male offsprings to be dependent like her. Nature had provided for this type of balance. We reversed nature by burning and pulling a civilized nigger apart and bullwhipping the other to the point of death, all in her presence. By her being left alone, unprotected, with the MALE IMAGE DESTROYED, the ordeal caused her to move from her psychologically dependent state to a frozen, independent state. In this frozen, psychological state of independence, she will raise her MALE and female offspring in reversed roles. For FEAR of the young male’s life, she will psychologically train him to be MENTALLY WEAK and DEPENDENT, but PHYSICALLY STRONG. Because she has become psychologically independent, she will train her FEMALE offsprings to be psychologically independent. What have you got? You’ve got the nigger WOMAN OUT FRONT AND THE nigger MAN BEHIND AND SCARED. This is a perfect situation of sound sleep and economics. Before the breaking process, we had to be alertly on guard at all times. Now, we can sleep soundly, for out of frozen fear his woman stands guard for us. He cannot get past her early slave-molding process. He is a good tool, now ready to be tied to the horse at a tender age. By the time a nigger boy reaches the age of sixteen, he is soundly broken in and ready for a long life of sound and efficient work and the reproduction of a unit of good labor force. Continually through the breaking of uncivilized savage niggers, by throwing the nigger female savage into a frozen psychological state of independence, by killing the protective male image, and by creating a submissive dependent mind of the nigger male slave, we have created an orbiting cycle that turns on its own axis forever, unless a phenomenon occurs and re-shifts the position of the male and female slaves. We show what we mean by example. Take the case of the two economic slave units and examine them close.

THE NEGRO MARRIAGE

We breed two nigger males with two nigger females. Then, we take the nigger male away from them and keep them moving and working. Say one nigger female bears a nigger female and the other bears a nigger male; both nigger females—being without influence of the nigger male image, frozen with a independent psychology—will raise their offspring into reverse positions. The one with the female offspring will teach her to be like herself, independent and negotiable (we negotiate with her, through her, by her, negotiates her at will). The one with the nigger male offspring, she being frozen subconscious fear for his life, will raise him to be mentally dependent and weak, but physically strong; in other words, body over mind. Now, in a few years when these two offsprings become fertile for early reproduction, we will mate and breed them and continue the cycle. That is good, sound and long range comprehensive planning.

WARNING: POSSIBLE INTERLOPING NEGATIVES

Earlier, we talked about the non-economic good of the horse and the nigger in their wild or natural state; we talked out the principle of breaking and tying them together for orderly production. Furthermore, we talked about paying particular attention to the female savage and her offspring for orderly future planning, then more recently we stated that, by reversing the positions of the male and female savages, we created an orbiting cycle that turns on its own axis forever unless a phenomenon occurred and reshifts positions of the male and female savages. Our experts warned us about the possibility of this phenomenon occurring, for they say that the mind has a strong drive to correct and re-correct itself over a period of time if it can touch some substantial original historical base; and they advised us that the best way to deal with the phenomenon is to shave off the brute’s mental history and create a multiplicity of phenomena of illusions, so that each illusion will twirl in its own orbit, something similar to floating balls in a vacuum. This creation of multiplicity of phenomena of illusions entails the principle of crossbreeding the nigger and the horse as we stated above, the purpose of which is to create a diversified division of labor; thereby creating different levels of labor and different values of illusion at each connecting level of labor. The results of which is the severance of the points of original beginnings for each sphere illusion. Since we feel that the subject matter may get more complicated as we proceed in laying down our economic plan concerning the purpose, reason and effect of crossbreeding horses and niggers, we shall lay down the following definition terms for future generations. Orbiting cycle means a thing turning in a given path. Axis means upon which or around which a body turns. Phenomenon means something beyond ordinary conception and inspires awe and wonder. Multiplicity means a great number. Means a globe. Crossbreeding a horse means taking a horse and breeding it with an ass and you get a dumb, backward, ass long-headed mule that is not reproductive nor productive by itself. Crossbreeding niggers mean taking so many drops of good white blood and putting them into as many nigger women as possible, varying the drops by the various tone that you want, and then letting them breed with each other until another circle of color appears as you desire. What this means is this: Put the niggers and the horse in a breeding pot, mix some asses and some good white blood and what do you get? You got a multiplicity of colors of ass backward, unusual niggers, running, tied to backward ass long-headed mules, the one productive of itself, the other sterile. (The one constant, the other dying, we keep the nigger constant for we may replace the mules for another tool) both mule and nigger tied to each other, neither knowing where the other came from and neither productive for itself, nor without each other.

CONTROLLED LANGUAGE

Crossbreeding completed, for further severance from their original beginning, WE MUST COMPLETELY ANNIHILATE THE MOTHER TONGUE of both the new nigger and the new mule, and institute a new language that involves the new life’s work of both. You know language is a peculiar institution. It leads to the heart of a people. The more a foreigner knows about the language of another country the more he is able to move through all levels of that society. Therefore, if the foreigner is an enemy of the country, to the extent that he knows the body of the language, to that extent is the country vulnerable to attack or invasion of a foreign culture. For example, if you take a slave, if you teach him all about your language, he will know all your secrets, and he is then no more a slave, for you can’t fool him any longer, and BEING A FOOL IS ONE OF THE BASIC INGREDIENTS OF ANY INCIDENTS TO THE MAINTENANCE OF THE SLAVERY SYSTEM. For example, if you told a slave that he must perform in getting out “our crops” and he knows the language well, he would know that “our crops” didn’t mean “our crops” and the slavery system would break down, for he would relate on the basis of what “our crops” really meant. So you have to be careful in setting up the new language; for the slaves would soon be in your house, talking to you as “man to man” and that is death to our economic system. In addition, the definitions of words or terms are only a minute part of the process. Values are created and transported by communication through the body of the language. A total society has many interconnected value systems. All the values in the society have bridges of language to connect them for orderly working in the society. But for these language bridges, these many value systems would sharply clash and cause internal strife or civil war, the degree of the conflict being determined by the magnitude of the issues or relative opposing strength in whatever form. For example, if you put a slave in a hog pen and train him to live there and incorporate in him to value it as a way of life completely, the biggest problem you would have out of him is that he would worry you about provisions to keep the hog pen clean, or the same hog pen and make a slip and incorporate something in his language whereby he comes to value a house more than he does his hog pen, you got a problem. He will soon be in your house.

Starting Anew…My Hair Journey

Starting Anew! Big Chop 1/21/2011

On January 21, 2011, I was looking in the mirror at my hair and on the phone with my BFF Sharnia and telling her I wanted to cut all my hair off!!  The day before I had hennaed my hair and did a deep conditioning avocado mask and attempted to do a satin braid out that my other friend Marci had posted on the Koils by Nature FanPage!  When I took out the satin braid out I looked at my hair and was so disgusted!! My hair was growing so beautifully but the color patch that I got a few months back was breaking off so bad and it was about a 3-inch difference!  I felt that there was no way my hair would grow back healthy!  I was suppose to get my hair in Nubian twist by Ms Jameesha Moore the following day, but I could not get my hair braided knowing I had sever color damage!  So while talking to Sharnia, I started cutting my hair…I said “no turning back now!”  I went scissor happy and then went to the barbershop to get my hair shaped!  I’ve had color in my hair before, relaxed and natural but this bleaching job was a bit much for my hair!  I would color my hair again, but I would never bleach it!

I am really enjoying my new cut and I love the fact that I can use Koils by Nature from the root to the ends and I can really document my hair growth; I also know HOW to truly take care of my hair!  When I did my big chop in Sept 07, (way before KBN) I was using Black Gel…and water!!  I didn’t know how to care for my TWA!  Now I can start right!!   I am so excited…all the men in my life love it and my baby boy Kendall asked if my hair was, magic…LOL!

Here are so pictures of my hair before my color, with my fab color and the new me!!

I loved the color here too....but my hair didn't!!

Here are some pictures of my hair…

December 2009 I love the color!!!

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture!!!!

I found this compact cool mist humidifier from Walgreens for under $25.00!!!!  I have seen a major difference in my hair & sinus :-) This cool mist humidifier is compact and it uses a 20oz water bottle….so no filling no mess!!! With this cold, dry weather we are experiencing across the United States, this is a great inexpensive & natural way to add moisture to your hair & sinuses at night while you sleep!

Moisture is key for our hair!  Lack of moisture = breakage & shedding!

Qualities of Oils

A Note About the Different Qualities of Oil

Cold Pressed - A method of mechanical extraction where heat is reduced and minimized throughout the batching of the raw material. This helps the oil maintain its original state, constituents, and depth. Temperatures are rigorously controlled to ensure that it does not exceed 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit. Although not a practical method of extraction for all vegetable oils on the market it is highly regarded as the extraction method of choice. Expeller Pressed - A method of natural, mechanical extraction and processing of oils where a small amount of heat is produced simply through the frictional heat created by hydraulic presses. This is usually around 120-200 degrees Fahrenheit and makes the oil suitable and economical as a base for cosmetics because of its fairly undisturbed molecular state. It also makes a fine food grade oil. Refined – A fully processed oil where it has been exposed to all methods of refinement including a flash fluctuation in temperature as high as 450 degrees and winterization as low as -30 degrees, deodorization, which removes the heavy and often unsettling odor in oil, and finally bleaching, where natural clays and other mediums are used to alter or remove an oils color, and scent. This makes for an economical oil in cosmetics and body care products, but it is not the healthiest as a food grade oil. Partially Refined – A process where only some of the methods available are employed to produce a manufactured oil. Only one or two of the three available methods are used in a partially refined oil. These include, but are not limited to; deodorization, winterization and natural bleaching. These methods are used for oils which have been known historically to go rancid quickly, and they are also used to further stabilize an oil or remove its heavy odor and deep color. Unrefined – A process of mechanical extraction and screen filtering where no additional refining process has taken place. This ensures the finest quality product and makes the oil the most exquisite for food and cosmetic preparation. The unrefined process helps oil retain a rich, strong flavor and color that is true to its natural state. Unrefined oils are always darker in color and richer in scent.

A Note about the different qualities of oil All of the oils we stock have different and varying degrees of quality. And all of them have been processed by distinct and various methods. The information below will help you better understand not only our line of oils, but also the entire industry of oils and their methods of extraction.

Natural Beauty of the Week

There is a rise in the number of women choosing to go natural and bravely doing the Big Chop (BC). The Big Chop (BC) is cutting all the relaxed hair off at one time, leaving only the natural hair;  going to a barber is best, because they deal with natural hair on a regular basis.  The big chop is the most significant step in the natural hair journey and a very brave way to start.  Lots of women want to go natural, but they are afraid on how they may look if choosing to do the BC, its the fear of the unknown, how will people react?  How will I react?  Will my boyfriend or husband like me natural?  That’s why doing the BC is not only physically changing your looks and body, but mentally it’s changing you and how you see yourself!  For some it takes time and for others they embrace the new woman and hit the grown running!  I am always asked about transitioning and the BC, and I tell women, you have to mentally prepare yourself for the BC, when you are ready nothing or no one will stop you!  You will embrace and love the new REAL you!  The beautiful person that has been hiding behind relaxers and weaves, the beautiful person that God created in His own image, if you were not in love with yourself before going natural…you will begin to fall in love with yourself…..it’s a beautiful journey and I am so glad I have beautiful women to share this ride with….. ~Meet Ms Caneesha~
First off CONGRATULATIONS on your new natural journey! How long have you been thinking about going natural? I only started to think about going natural long term over the past 6 months, I have always done it temporarily every year. Did/Do you have positive support on your journey? I have an awesome support system my husband is my #1 supporter and my Big sis Pam is my 911 emergency operator when i’m discouraged about my hair she always comes to my rescue. How did you feel after all the relaxed hair was cut off?? Cutting off my relaxer was no big deal because i’m not big on hair because i’m so diverse I love changing it up and chopping it off is nothing new for me LOL. What was your family’s reaction? My family is use to me doing this every year and have always be supportive Who, if any was your inspiration? My biggest inspiration was Pam Jenkins and the KBN users on FB and most of all my husband when I mentioned going natural for at least a year he was sooo enthused and told me how much he’d love it and how beautiful i’d be

What products do you use? I use KoilsbyNature products and I absolutely love’em

If you have daughter(s) are they natural? My daughter is not natural right now but maybe soon she’s 7 and is loving her long swaying hair LOL What does it mean to you to a natural mother with daughter(s) Being a natural mother with a daughter is awesome and i’m enjoying being a positive example and loving how i’m showing her there are other ways to be beautiful. What have you learned from this experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life? I have learned from this experience that my hair doesn’t make me relaxed or natural it’s my inner beauty that matters most…

Relaxed Caneesha!

Natural Beauty runs in teh family! Cannesha and her Mommy!

Living Out Your Dreams

My Dream 11/12/2009 Pamela by Pamela KoilsbyNature Jenkins on Tuesday, November♥ 13, 2009 at 10:44am I had the most powerful dream last night!!! I have never ever dreamed about God, even when I was going through what I thought were some of the worst moments in my life, when I was praying like no other. But last night, I dreamed about Him!! I was walking and not sure where I was, all I knew that it was dark and I kept walking, then I started to see light and felt warmth, as I moved closer to the warm light, a hand came down and a strong but soothing voice said “Trust Me!” I grab the hand and I felt safe, I felt filled with the spirit, I felt relief and I felt at peace! I am on a Spiritual High and love it! Trust and believe in Him!!! Love yall and this really happened to me last night :-)
Update 11/18/2010 This past Saturday, I celebrated my 1 year of leaving the government and pursuing Koils by Nature full time!  What better way to celebrate this special day than at the Queen City Hair Affair presented by Natural Connections!  I was so overwhelmed when I saw all the ladies waiting on Koils by Nature (I was 2 hours late….long story) if I wasn’t so tired I would have been crying the ugly cry!  The love and admiration I felt was so amazing; I was thanking the Lord with every sale and praised the Lord at the end of the event!!  I absolutely LOVE what I do.  God has put this in my heart and He has not failed me!  Anytime I have a tiny bit of feeling of doubt…God send someone to renew my faith in what I am doing!  I have been so incredibly blessed this year and I know 2011 will be and even more AMAZING year!  I am a living witness that when you live the dream God has put in your heart!  He will move people, places, things and circumstances all to work in your favor!  Having unwavering Faith in God is the first step…trust Him!  remember that both fear and faith is believing in the unknown; faith is of God, fear is the enemy! My goal with Koils by Nature is to continue to provide you all with EXCELLENT products, customer service and content! I love & appreciate you all soooooo very much!!!! God Bless! First Rod Set!!!!

I always wanted to get my hair set, but I was concerned about how it would look and how long it would last!!  I DO NOT, I REPEAT I DO NOT like sitting under the dryer!  Even when my hair was relaxed, it was always short and max dryer time was 25minutes!  Going to the Queen City Hair Affair, I met this beautiful natural lady and her hair was set!  I told her I was going to try it!  Well I did and I love it!!!!!! 11/18/2010 I did not got o my regular natural hiar stylist!  I took my own products: Jane Carter Solutions Wrap & Roll Koils by Nature: Replensing Hair Oil Koils by Nature: Nourishing Hair & Body Butter After 1 hour and 3 minutes under the HORRIBLE hair dryer! (lol) I love it!!!! Shrinkage is a BEAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will keep this for at least 2 weeks!!!  I will post pics every couple of days!  I love it….this may not be a protective style….but I will be rocking this for the winter!

Koils by Nature on The Nappturalite Radio Show – Hair Horror Stories

The Nappturalite Radio Show will feature 3 naturalpreneurs and we will share our “hair horror stories” & give out treats to our audience TODAY: Myself :-) of Koils by Nature , Danesha Sapp of matriarc media, and Santeyonne Powell of Pura Body Naturals!!! Today @ 5pm CST/6pm EST www.naturalhairradio.com Tune in!!!! Picture of my Hair Horror Story will be post after the show!

Here is my Hair Horror Story! In January of 2008; only for months after my BC, I deiced to get a sew in weave; I wanted my hair to grow and I just had a baby so I did not want to have to deal with my hair!  I ordered my expensive Remy hair online; paid $200 to get it sew in so pretty!  I took my hair out about 6 weeks later and this was the results!

Close Up..I didn't think myhair was going to grow back!

Left Side

The Front!

Wen out and bought a wig...i wore it for almost 4 months!

This experience is what really pushed me into making my own products!  I did the research, found what herbs stimulate the scalp for hair growth, made my own oils, and rubbed my scalp with it every day!  My edges have grown back, but they are still so fragile!

What is your hair Horror Story?

My hair today after 2 years worth of growth!

The herbs that will stimulate your scalp for hair growth are burdock root, rosemary, calendula, nettle & horsetail…I use  these herbs in the Soothing Herbal Gel, Moisturizing Shealo Leave In Conditioner, Stimulating Hair Growth Rinse, Stimulating Hair Growth Serum and Pomades!

Thankful & Grateful

Hello Everyone, Yesterday, I woke up as I always do @ 0630 took my oldest son to school, came home fed my youngest son breakfast and took him to school; I got home looking at the number of orders that I had to package and ship out; took a deep breath sat down at my computer, checked my email, updated the Koils by Nature Fanpage on FB & Twitter and for one moment, I thought to myself, “do I need to get a “real job” is this what I am suppose to be doing with my life?”  Now I do not have these thoughts often, but when I do….HE knows how to reassure me!  As soon as that thought came into my mind, my Koils by Nature line rang, I answered, “Good morning this is Pamela!” and the person on the, other end was stumbling over her words, and I said “Hello!” and she said, “is this Pamela Jenkins? The owner of Koils by Nature?”  I laughed a little and said ‘ Yes it is, how may I help you?”; she was taken aback that I answered the phone… she called to check on the status of her order, she was so excited about getting her products.  I informed her that her products would be mailed today and then we started to talk….about everything for an hour and forty-five minutes!!! She told me that she LOVED Koils by Nature and what it has done for her!  I knew this was God, He sent her to me to reassure me and my faith in what He has called me to do!  I feel truly blessed when my customers email me, hit me up on FB and call me to let me know how much they LOVE KBN!  I put love in everything that I do when it comes to KBN and I so bless that you all trust me with your hair and allow me to provide you with wonderful & affordable  natural products! I am so thankful and grateful for each and every one of you! Especially you Maly, thank you for the wonderful conversation today!  Thank you Sharnia,  Nef, Marci, Gaye, Devorah, Tamara Wright, Nakeisha, Ayana (iHeartmyHair), Kizzy (Rockin My TWA) for being a SuperDuper Koils by Nature supporter!  I appreciate you all so much! Love, peace, & blessings Pamela 10/29/2010

I Love My Hair

This video is so amazingly awesome! I am soooo happy that in this day and age of being bombarded by the Beyonces, Nikki Minajs, weaves, lacefronts wigs and more weaves; that little girls get to see a Sesame Street Character that looks like them and she talking about “loving her natural hair” *tear* How cool is that??!!! This character was created by the Head Writer (Caucasian) at Sesame Street for his adopted Ethiopian daughter!!!  When she started asking questions about her hair…they didn’t straighten her hair or put a relaxer in it!  Her Daddy, create this character to help her embrace her natural beauty!! Mark my words this family will be on Oprah by the end of the month! Share this video..post it on your walls, tweet and email to everyone!

I am have nothing against Beyonce, Nikki Minaj, weave or wig wearers, (I used to be a weave queen) it just that’s what we see that ALL the time and it’s refreshing to see a children’s character with curly natural hair and loving it!!!!
Love, Peace & Blessings!

Koils by Nature Newly Natural of the Week 10-4

The beautiful person that has been hiding behind relaxers and weaves, the beautiful person that God created in His own image, if you were not in love with yourself before going natural…you will begin to fall in love with yourself…..it’s a beautiful journey and I am so glad I have beautiful women to share this ride with!
Meet Ms Rachelle BC’d 9/10/10

How long have you been thinking about going natural? I have thought about going natural for a very long time, but was fearful. I always thought that it was easier to have processed hair versus natural hair. I always loved how the women who were natural looked, just happy and carefree.
My family has always been about “hair”, how long the hair was, how good the hair was so it was a hard thing for them to hear. Others outside of the family encouraging and just as eager as I was to witness the aftermath…lol.

When did you BC and after how long of a transition? I BC on 9/10/10 and I transitioned for about 2 months. It had gotten to a point where I could no longer stand the two different textures, at that point I knew it was time.

How did you feel after all the relaxed hair was cut off?? You know, I felt liberated in a sense. I felt free.

What was your family’s reaction? Ohhhh, My families reaction was one of un-certainty. My father was like “well, this ain’t the first time you did something I told you not todo.”; My sister was like she would just have to get used to it; My mother was like she too would have to get use to it; my sons of course didnt like it much at all as they were always use to seeing Mom with alot of hair. And My little little sisters were like.. “I dont like Sissys hair like that” and the other was like “I like Sissys hair, can I have my hair like that?” and of course my fathers response to that was “no, maybe when you are an adult.” My co-workers were excited as well as surprised as they didn’t think I would follow through.

Who, if any was your inspiration? My Aunt Nadine, Of course Pamela Jenkins ;-) ,Momma Rose and my sister in law Jonell Adams

What products do you use? I have been trying to find out what works right now. I have been using though to moisturize Coconut oil, unrefined as well as Shea Butter, also unrefined, apricot oil or motions oil moisturizer.

If you have daughter(s) are they natural? N/A What does it mean to you to a natural mother with daughter(s) N/A What have you learned from this experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life? I have learned that I am still beautiful whether I have alot of hair or alittle. My BC has not changed who I am inside. I actually feel that I am noticed more now than before.

Relaxed Rachelle

Going/Being Natural….is it a Fad???

My good friend Nefertiti Adunni said, “being natural is sooo not a fad. IT’S A MOVEMENT!!! Stay in motion!!”  What are your thoughts??
definition of fad- a practice or interest followed for a time with exaggerated zeal. -merriam-webster
definition of movementthe act or process of moving; especially : change of place or position or posture (2) : a particular instance or manner of moving -merriam-webster
I see going natural as

Koils by Nature Newly Natural of the Week 9-27

My First Newly Natural Spotlight is Mrs. Tamara Wright, Beaufort SC. Big Chop August 2010
How long have you been thinking about going natural? I wanted to go natural for about two years. I tried transitioning once before with no luck. I got so caught up in the way other people thought about my looks that I gave up. But this time, I was determined. I decided that I would transition for about 6 months and then do my BC so that there would be no opportunity for me to turn back. After my 5th month, I just couldn’t handle it anymore. I took the scissors and chopped it off.
Did/Do you have positive support on your journey? Before I cut my hair off, I made up in my mind that I was doing this for ME. I didn’t care what ANYONE thought. Luckily everyone was very positive. I didn’t get any negative feedback from my loved ones so that made it so much easier. I thank God for Facebook groups like Koils by Nature and Rocking My TWA. If I get a little frustrated with my hair I have those groups to turn to. I also thank God for YouTube. The ladies that chronicle their hair journeys really inspire me.
When did you BC and after how long of a transition? I transitioned for 5 months and did my BC on August 20, 2010. That was one of the best days of my life.
How did you feel after all the relaxed hair was cut off?? I felt so liberated. So beautiful. So REAL. So Natural. I felt like I was PRETTIER than any video vixen or model because I was REAL. I no longer need weaves or relaxers to make me beautiful. I am beautiful naturally.
What was your family’s reaction? My husband didn’t really like it at first. We went out the night of my BC. As we were walking on the waterfront it started to rain. I didn’t have to run back to the car or get an umbrella because my hair could get wet and STILL look good. So we continued to walk, not letting the rain ruin our evening. He said he LOVED that and asked that I just let him get used to it. Now, we watch YouTube videos together and I talk to him about my hair like he’s one of my girlfriends. He is so supportive and I love him for that.
Who, if any was your inspiration? I was my inspiration. I love myself too much to allow chemicals to damage my hair. I want to be a healthy woman and that includes my hair.
What products do you use? I wash and condition my hair with Suave all natural Shampoo and Conditioner. It has almond and shea butter in it. I recently started using Koils By Nature products. I’m in love with the hair & body butter and the gel. My barber does a deep condition in my hair about once a month with Redkin products. My hair is super soft after that. I also take a multi vitamin everyday and drink LOTS of water.
If you have daughter(s) are they natural? I have a son with more hair than any woman I know. His hair is natural.
What does it mean to you to a natural mother with daughter(s) I decided to take care of his hair the way I take care of mine. I will not use any products with alcohol on his hair and I keep it moisturized. His hair is thick and healthy, they way I want mine to be.
What have you learned from this experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life? I learned to love myself by watching what I use in my hair and taking care of my hair and body. I learned that I am so much more beautiful without weave and perms. I learned to care less about what other people think. A lot of people are simple minded and don’t care to learn about natural hair before jumping to a conclusion about it. But I don’t and I won’t let anyone EVER tell me that I made the wrong decision. “ My hair is nappy, but my life is straight!” -Tamara Wright

Dry Hair? I Can Help!

Fall is here and with fall come beautiful leaves, cooler weather, fashionable boots and sweaters and DRY AIR = DRY HAIR!!!

Please ensure you drink plenty of water, hydrate your hair from the inside and the out! For Natural Beauties….a spray bottle is a MUST have! You can put purified/distilled water, any carrier oil of your choice, evoo (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), avocado oil (rich in vitamins and beta carotene), sweet almond and grapeseed oils are also EXCELLENT oils, aloe vera juice or gel, a touch of glycerin or honey (humectants – be careful during the winter months)

Humectants are used to attract, hold and retain moisture, optimizing the hair’s resilience, suppleness, and elasticity. Through their moisture absorbing properties, the give hair body and feeling of fullness. Humectants also prevent products from drying out. Natural humectants include vegetable glycerin, sorbitol and honey.

Do you have dry hair???

African American Hair is the MOST fragile out of all the races because of our lovely curls, so it must be handled with the utmost care! Our Oily hair is very dry, porous and brittle, mainly because the natural oils have a hard time reaching the ends. The more curls the more fragile and the only thing that can combat dry hair is moisture! Moisture also stops the hair from breaking. Our hair thrives on moisture; our Kids will only flourish when they are well moisturized. African American hair produces more sebum as other hair types. Sebum is the natural oils that hair produces naturally to protect and lubricate our Kids. Almost anything can disturb the moisture balance of your Kids and draw all the moisture out. Extreme weather conditions, Synthetic products, and heat can upset the balance of the hair and make hair very dry, which will lead to breakage!

I am asked by many women, how to combat dry hair??? When I am asked this question, I always ask the following questions:

  1. Do you hydrate your hair?? (hair steamer/DC with a plastic cap under the dryer)
  2. How often do you wash your hair?
  3. How often do you DC (deep condition) your hair?
  4. Does your shampoo contain sulfates?
  5. Do your products contain proteins?
  6. Do you spray your hair with water or use water-based products?
  7. Do you seal your hair with a butter or oil?
  8. Are you drinking enough water?
  9. AVOID products with drying alcohols

Everything listed above can lead to dry hair!

  • Hydration is essential to maintain healthy hair, whether it’s natural or relaxed! The ONLY thing that can hydrate your hair is WATER!!! Oils and butters seal the moisture in! I recommend the Huetiful Hair Steamer helps overcome the variables that lead to dry hair. It does this by restoring moisture 5x better than deep conditioners alone. The Huetiful Hair Steamer achieves these great results by opening up the cuticles of your hair to allow the conditioner or hair treatment to be pulled deeply inside the hair shaft. While the hair cuticles are open, the Huetiful Hair Steamer bathes your hair with warm mist to replenish lost moisture. The Huetiful Hair Steamer works excellent with Kids by Nature’s Hydrating Shealoe Creamy Conditioner. But just don’t take it from us. Watch these testimonials from others who have used the Huetiful Hair Steamer.

  • Deep Conditioning is a formula designed to improve the health of your hair. Deep Conditioning really penetrates the hair shaft restoring vital vitamins and minerals to the hair. Either by putting a plastic cap on your hair and/or sitting under a hooded dryer. If you do not deep condition at least once a month, please start by deep conditioning 2x a month until you see your hair retaining moisture; once you see a difference in your hair you can cut back to once a month! Deep Conditioning is essential for retaining moisture!
  • Shampooing How often do you wash your hair? Washing your hair too often with a sulfate shampoo will dry out, damage hair, causing breakage. is an Most shampoo contain Sodium lauryl sulfates and/or laureth sulfates are in dish washing liquids to CUT GREASE, so it will do the same for your hair; it will strip all the oils from your hair leaving it dry and brittle. Shampooing is dehydrating for our curly locks and it is NOT necessary for cleansing our hair. Washing your hair with a hydrating conditioner, or Co-Washing is excellent for our hair; it will get rid of excess sweat and sebum. Co-washing will become your Curls best friend!
  • Proteins Hair is composed of strong structural protein called keratin. This is the same kind of protein that makes up the nails and the outer layer of skin. (Since your hair is 98% protein; unless you have color (which strips a layer of protein off so color can be deposited) you do not need a product that has protein to be added to your hair on a daily or weekly basis)
  • Protein once a month with deep conditioner could be sufficient (pay attention to your hair and find out what works for your hair)
  • Additional protein could cause hair to become dry, brittle and breakage will occur.
  • Having a good balance of protein aids in moisture absorption and help your hair retain moisture.
  • Each strand of hair consists of three layers.
    1. An innermost layer or medulla which is only present in large thick hairs.
    2. The middle layer known as the cortex. The cortex provides strength and boththe color and the texture of hair.
    3. The outermost layer is known as the cuticle. The cuticle is thin andcolorless and serves as a protector of the cortex.
  • Spraying Hair with Water/Using Water-Based Products remember H2O is the only substance on earth that will add moisture to you hair! This means H2O or water-based products (water is the first ingredient on the list) will MOISTURIZE your hair! You MUST SEAL your hair once you’ve wet it or apply a water-based product; oils and butters creates barrier and forms a seal to lock in the moisture.
Simple Deep Conditioning Recipes:

Old Skool DC

1 Cup of Mayo

1 Egg (excellent protein treatment) (no egg if you are protein sensitive)

1 tsp of (Extra Virgin Olive Oil)

1 tsp of Macadamia Nut oil (or grapeseed, almond, jojoba)

1 tbsp of honey

Easy Hair Conditioning Mask

1 very ripe Avocado pitted

1 Egg (excellent protein treatment) (no egg if you are protein sensitive)

1 tsp of (Extra Virgin Olive Oil)

1 tsp of Macadamia Nut oil (or grapeseed, almond, jojoba, evoo - {extra virgin olive oil})

1 tbsp of honey

Leave on hair for 30 minutes or longer with a plastic cap or a hooded dryer or the Huetiful Hair Steamer!

4. Since hair is protein, a diet that is too low in protein may cause some thinning in hair or retardation in the growth cycle. Some conditioners contain proteins; when too much protein is put on the hair, either every week or every two weeks it can leave the hair very hard and brittle. Try to limited protein to the hair at least once a month. Especially if your diet is rich in proteins!

5. Having a Spray bottles is essential of natural hair! It is beneficial to add water to your hair before styling. Water (moisture) keeps your hair flexible for styling and it will not break easily and hair can reach its maximum length.

Simple Spritz Recipe

1 – 6-8 oz spray bottle

Grape Seed oil is also excellent for protecting the hair against high heat!

Easy Weight Loss Lifestyle Tips

Drink at least 1/2 your weight in ounces of water everyday!!!

* Water is very, very important!!   It helps our bodies eliminate toxins and impurities and it also help us maintain a healthy body weight.

Run/Walking for at least 30 – 45 mins (4-5 days a week only for the first 2 weeks after that 3 times a week is great!!)

* Your body starts to burn fat after 20 mins of constant cardio workout and will continue to burn fat up to 2 hours after depending on how long you get your heart rate up.

Read Labels!! Read Labels!! Read Labels!! Read Labels!! just like you read prescriptions, read what you are putting you your body!!

* Avoid foods with any of the following in the first 4 ingredients. Remember, whatever is in the 1st thru the 4th ingredients is what the product is mainly made of!!!

* Enriched or bleached anything (anything white!!) (Enriched means that all of the good stuff was taken out and they put a little of the good stuff back in.) (Bleached means that the product has been highly processed) This makes the products shelf life longer. Your body will process these food as fat.

*High fructose corn syrup – this product is man made.   There is a signal that goes from the stomach to the brain to let it know when it’s full and high fructose corn syrup stops this signal!

*Partially hydrogenated oil/soy bean oils – this is also a man made product and hydrogen is pumped into natural oils to make the shelf life longer and it’s cheaper to produce.   Depresses the thyroid–which lowers your energy levels, makes you feel less like exercising, and generally makes you fatter!

*Sugar Sugars is ok, but try not to eat for that 5g a day. (Sugar alternatives: Agave, Honey)

Please No Artificial Sugars such as Splenda or Equal!!!

Eat at least 6-8 times a day- Eat a healthy and balanced breakfast, lunch and dinner and eat 5 small meals or snacks during the day and in between meals.  The more you fuel your body the harder it works.  NEVER skip a meal!!! For the 1st month try and eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch.

Avoid eating after 8:00 and try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep!!

Whole grains, rolled oats are good for you!

Good Luck!

These foods benefit the body in so many ways. They power your brain, and correctly and efficiently fuel your body. Super foods fight infection, enhance your immune system, and protect against diseases such as osteoporosis, heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, and respiratory infections.

Henna for African American Hair

Henna lawsonia inermis, is a plant. It is a large bush, or small tree, that grows in hot, dry climates. There is evidence from Egypt that henna was regularly used to dye hair five thousand years ago, and may have been used in Jericho as early as eight thousand years ago. Henna was and still is used to keep hair healthy and to color gray hair.

Henna Plant

Henna is a natural way to color and condition your hair.  Henna is powdered leaves from t is a large bush, or small tree, that grows in hot, dry climates, Lawsonia inermis. Henna is commercially cultivated in UAE, Morocco, Yemen, Tunisia, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Western India, Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Sudan.  Henna contains Hannatannic Acid which, when mixed with hot water, will coat the hair.  It seals in oils and tightens the hair cuticle giving your hair a rich, healthy shine.  Its effects will last up to 3 months. Mountain Rose Herbs (2010-09-15). .

There is evidence from Egypt that henna was regularly used to dye hair five thousand years ago, and may have been used in Jericho as early as eight thousand years ago. Henna leaves are harvested, dried, and powdered. When mixed with a mildly acidic liquid, henna will stain skin, hair, and fingernails reddish-orange. Quality henna does NOT have metals, lead, and it does NOT “coat the hair.” The molecules in pure body art quality henna penetrate and bind with your hair’s keratin, and make your hair thick, strong, and silky!

Henna Powder

Henna works wonders on our Kinky Kurly Koils! It doesn’t dye the hair red, but it does give red highlights, relaxes the hair and makes it silky. Body art quality henna will rinse out of locks, braids, and curls, and can be used over relaxed hair. You can mix your henna, with vinegar, lemon juice, yogurt and distilled or purified water.  You can also add and egg (protien), olive oil, macadamia nut oils, coconut oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil….or whatever oil you prefer!  I you can even add either beet juice or carrot juice for a different color!

Deep Conditioning Sundays

Sunday, is the beginning of the week for most folks, we go to church, prepare Sunday dinner and prepare ourselves mentally for the upcoming workweek!  Let Sunday be your deep conditioning day!  Treat your hair before the hustle and bustle of the upcoming week, when most of us have practice, homework to go over, dinner to cook, and getting kids ready for the next school day.  We do this with our eyes close and hearts open.  Now take a moment to take care of your hair!  This easy & cost affective deep conditioning recipe will provide moisture, nutrients, protein, and vital vitamins for your hair!

Avocado Deep Conditioner

Excellent for dry and damaged hair; do this once a week and you will see a huge difference in your hair!

Items needed

2 very ripe avocado –Rich in vitamins and mineral such as, Vitamin E, A, & B6 complex and potassium, beta carotene, copper and letchin; highly nutritive and softening  that contains penetrating oils for hair and skin.

1 egg yolk (room temp) an excellent source of high quality  protein, eggs contain 9 essential amino acids, Egg yolks are naturally rich in vitamin A, D, E and several vitamins of B-group. All of them are good for hair: vitamins A, D and E are especially useful to treat hair loss, besides, vitamin A increases sebum production which oils dry hair and prevents dandruff and thick scalp, Vitamin D provides hair growth, and vitamin E increases oxygen absorption. B-vitamins are mostly responsible for hemoglobin. They increase the amount of oxygen and improve blood circulation.

Another significant part of egg yolk is fatty acids which make hair shiny and manageable. In addition, fatty acids were proven to fight dandruff, hair loss, psoriasis and flaky scalp, because they improve the skin structure

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil – It has a rich, full bodied flavor with a strong aroma and is golden brown in color. Has a great conditioning effect in body care recipes and can be used in almost all applications because of its stable nature.

1 tbsp macadamia nut oil – This fine oil comes from the pressed nuts of the Macadamia tree. It is a priceless delight for the skin and has proven itself to be one of the best regenerative oils available. It is high in monounsaturated fatty acids, and closely resembles sebum (the oil naturally produced by ones skin to help protect it). Macadamia oil is a fabulous, protective oil with a high absorption rate and has been successfully used as a healing oil for scars, sunburns, minor wounds and other irritations.

1 tbsp of honey – is antiseptic and emollient and moisturizing.  It helps draw out impurities out of the skin and hair. It is a great conditioning agent for hair.

Directions:

Skin and pit avocados, mash them really well with either a wooden spoon or mix at a low speed hand mixer, add egg, EVOO, macadamia nut oil and honey.  Blend well and apply to hair in sections, mainly focusing on the ends of your hair.  You will see your hair get very soft and more manageable.  Leave on for at least 30 mins, with or without heat.

Conditioners

Conditioners have positive charge and  hair has a negative charge; this helps the conditioner to cling to the hair, Conditioners help retexture hair and skin by providing a protective coating over the cells.  This lubricates the hair shaft, promoting softness & help breakage and tangles.  Ensure your conditioners have a low pH and focus on the ends of our hair; because of our curls, it is hard for moisture to reach the ends of our hair.  Apply the conditioner of your choice and wrap your head in a towel or cover with a plastic cap and let it sit for at least 30 minutes; rinse with cool water to close cuticle and provide excellent shine to hair!

Here are some photos:

I love my hair!  It’s soft and shiny!

After I rinsed out the avocado deep conditioning hair  mask  I added the Replenishing Hair Oil, Herbal Gel and Nourishing Hair and Body Butter.

A 30-Minute Marriage/Relationship-Saver

I found this article and thought it would be very relevant to all relationships!

To feel loved and nurtured, we must believe deep down that our partner is really there for us. That sounds simple, but it’s far more complicated than most couples realize. Although Sally and Gary insisted that they were being attentive, they had difficulty being empathetic. That’s significant: Marital researchers have found that couples who help each other weather stressful situations outside the marriage have stronger, happier relationships than those who can’t.

The key is empathy. Empathy isn’t the same as sympathy or pity. It means being able to put yourself in another’s position, to feel what they feel and see what they see, without losing yourself in the process. And it means you do all that even though you may disagree with a partner’s perception, opinions, or feelings. Take 30 minutes a day, at a time that works best for both of you, to empathize with the stresses and strains you are each experiencing in other areas of your life. It can make a difference between a marriage that succeeds and one that fails. Consider:

Empathy Don’ts
  • Don’t stonewall (ignore what a partner is saying).
  • Don’t minimize a spouse’s concerns: “What’s the big deal?” “You’re always so sensitive!”
  • Don’t rush to fix the problem: “Well, if I were you I’d…” or “You should have…” Many people mistakenly believe that downplaying worries or offering advice is helpful. In fact, pat reassurances often magnify negative feelings, since they force a person to try even harder to feel acknowledged. Women especially resent a partner’s interruption with solutions, preferring instead to simply vent and know that someone is really listening.
Empathy Dos
  • Do pay attention. Set aside the newspaper or catalog and turn off the TV when your partner is talking. An occasional uh-huh or nod of the head indicates you haven’t zoned out.
  • Do validate feelings. “He gave that special assignment to the new recruit? I can see why you’re annoyed.”
  • Do ask questions with genuine interest. Make sure your partner knows you heard what he or she has said. “So how did you respond to him?”
  • Do respond with affection, understanding, and support: “I’m really sorry you have to put up with that.” “Oh, sweetheart, that could happen to anyone. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”
  • Do show support. Take your spouse’s side. “I think your boss went a little overboard, too,” is appropriate. “Well, you shouldn’t have been late in the first place” isn’t.

Rules for a Fair Fight

Before any couple can even begin to solve their problems, they have to learn how to use their anger constructively. How can anger be constructive? Use it to explore the underlying causes of your disagreements, and you’ll find ways to address both of your needs.

If bickering punctuates your days; if arguments escalate quickly until you’re both shouting things you later regret; or if you too often smile through gritted teeth while your stomach is roiling like an ocean in a hurricane, the following rules can help you defuse the rage and focus your energies on practical strategies for change. Make a promise to:

1. Remind yourself that it is okay to be angry, and don’t feel guilty about having those angry feelings. Women, especially, grow up believing that it is unladylike and bitchy to express any negative feelings. Better to suppress anger, they’re taught, than express it. But there are times when anger is legitimate and those occasions must be recognized and addressed. Once you do that, you’ll be in a stronger position to say how you honestly feel and find a path for change.

2. Understand that although you disagree, you are not enemies. No matter how much people love each other, differences will eventually trigger conflict. Fighting fair means you will not attack each other — physically or verbally. Name-calling, cursing, screaming, or blaming are verboten. So, is threatening separation or divorce.

3. Never use something that has been previously told to you in confidence as a weapon in an argument. When you do, you betray the trust your spouse has placed in you, and make it harder for your partner to feel emotionally safe in the marriage.

4. Never walk out of the room until you either both agree that an argument is over or have decided to table the problem and chosen a specific time to bring it up again.

5. Acknowledge each other’s feelings and perceptions, without judgment or criticism. There’s no “right” way to feel, and there will be times in every marriage that you simply will not agree. But you should always make the effort to unravel what is troubling your partner and show genuine caring for and awareness of his or her emotional experience. Phrases such as “I never thought of that” or “Tell me more about what you’re thinking” will help you break out of an anger stalemate.

Getting Him to Open Up

Until the counselor pointed it out, Jamie and Ben didn’t realize that the clash between her articulate, assertive style and his inability to give voice to his feelings was at the heart of many of their problems. She’s certainly not the only wife to find herself in a conversational tango when trying to get her husband to communicate. To help him express his feelings:

Understand the silences. It can be hurtful and infuriating to try to talk to a man and feel as if you’re talking to the wall. But while women often find silence uncomfortable, men find solace in it. What’s more, we often read into a partner’s silence our own desires, fears, and past experiences. If your parents endured long icy periods when they were angry and didn’t speak, you may infer that your husband’s lack of response means he’s upset with you. His silence may simply mean he really has nothing particular on his mind. Similarly, a man whose father left the office behind when he walked in the door may believe it’s inappropriate to talk about business issues or problems at home. Many men have reported that they don’t tell their wives things because they don’t want to worry them. That protectiveness, however, may be misinterpreted as lack of interest. Also, when he talks to others but not to you, it may be because he views having to make conversation and relay factual information as work. At home, he wants to relax. And that may mean sinking into his own thoughts or reverie.

Ask directly for what you need. Men and women have different definitions of the word “communication.” Men problem-solve, often silently. They proceed directly from Step 1 (“Here’s the issue”) to Step 3 (“Do this”). Of course, you believe in Step 2: bouncing suggestions and possibilities around before coming to a solution. If your man is not the bouncing type, try presenting a specific agenda: “I’d like to talk about Jake’s terrible behavior lately” or “We need to figure out how we’re going to handle Amanda’s ballet practices during the school week.”

Phrase your questions to provoke responses. “How was your day?” won’t jump-start a conversation. He may just say “fine” or “terrible.” “Tell me about your presentation to that new client” might engage him more fully.

Learn to argue constructively. Many men are afraid to say anything because past experience has taught them that they’ll be criticized or blamed for past crimes and misdemeanors.

Give him the floor. He may have learned to disengage as soon as you start talking, which makes you talk even more. Someone has to break the cycle; try counting to yourself if he’s silent, or give him a friendly look to encourage him to respond.

Appreciate the silences. More likely than not, your spouse will never be as loquacious as your best friend. And you probably don’t want him to be, either. So learn to listen to the silence. When he takes you in his arms for a long hug, shares in a joyful whoop with you when your son scores his first hockey goal, or reaches for your hand as you ride in the car, he may be saying a great deal.

Pick the right moment. You prefer talking when you get into bed because it’s the first time all day you can relax; your husband falls asleep the minute his head hits the pillow. You like chatting over morning coffee, his brain doesn’t get in gear until an hour later. Men often feel ambushed and tend to clam up unless they have a say in the timing of talks. They may also feel cornered when the whole agenda of your conversation is “the problem.” If you try raising issues while doing an activity (playing backgammon, cooking a special dinner, or gardening), the talk will flow more easily. Another tactic: Ask him to come to you when he’s ready to talk. You might try saying: “We don’t have to discuss this right now, but I really want to understand what you’re thinking about our moving to a bigger house. Talk to me when you’re ready.”

Secrets of Sexy Marriages

In every relationship, levels of sexual desire for both partners fluctuate. Some stages are predictable: when you first marry, after you have a child, when the kids leave home, when job pressures persist. These are all times when sexual moods and patterns of lovemaking may shift. Knowing this, and being confident enough to talk about it, strengthens intimacy. Couples with the sexiest marriages:

1. Remember that sex problems are sometimes red herrings. Understanding that impotence is a common problem at every stage of marriage is the first, and highest, hurdle most couples have to clear. Talking about the problem can be reassuring and often lessens the anxiety for both partners. In fact, the more both partners worry about the problem, the more intractable it becomes. However, wise couples recognize that impotence can also be a wake-up call, a signal of stress somewhere in the relationship. Instead of banishing feelings of frustration, unhappiness, or emotional overload — at work, at home, with your kids or other family members — ask yourselves if something is bothering one or both of you. Sit down and talk about issues in a nonconfrontational, nonjudgmental, and unhurried way. Once Cindy and Dan found the courage to talk, the episodes of sexual stage fright disappeared.

2. Don’t save affection for the bedroom only. Couples whose sex lives bring them the most happiness eroticize their lives — that is, they give affection physically and verbally through the day in different ways. They touch. Whether it’s reassuring or frantically passionate, touch makes the difference between making love and having sex. Touch is a reflection of what you feel inside: You can convey desire, appreciation, delight, a sense of safety as well as boredom, resentment, or anger.

3. Make time for love. Sexy wives know that lovemaking is a habit: The more you do it, the more you like it, and the more you like it, the more you do it. They make lovemaking a top priority, and if that means scheduling sex, so be it. It won’t be any less exciting just because it’s planned. Sexual excitement feeds on itself. Just do it.

4. Talk every day. Even if it’s just 10 minutes in the morning and 10 at night, voice your love. Call each other pet names, remember to say goodbye and good night. Be sure that you don’t fall into the mind-reader trap of assuming your partner knows or should know what you’re thinking and feeling simply “because he loves me.” Those in a healthy, sexy marriage make a point of expressing their feelings and their attraction to each other on a regular basis.

5. Kiss often. We’re not talking a perfunctory peck on the cheek but a deep, sensual, teasing kiss. Many longtime couples rarely kiss at all, going straight to intercourse when they have sex. Don’t you remember the backseat? The cool, dark movie theater and the thrill of making out? Steal a kiss!

6. Have adventures. Instead of sex behind a locked bedroom door, these couples make love at the beach, in the car, in the shower, on the living room floor. They keep their eyes open during sex — and sometimes leave the lights on — because they know that watching their partner’s eroticism makes sex easier.

7. Break the rules. Ask yourself: What ruts have we fallen into and how can we get out of them? Explore changes, even small ones, with which you both feel comfortable. Don’t nix ideas automatically; instead, be willing to experiment with videos, sex toys, and magazines.

8. Learn what pleases. Know what you like and don’t like in bed — and make sure your partner knows, too.

Real Men Can Do Housework…

…But in the real world, they often don’t. While studies from the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan confirm that this generation of couples does half the amount of housework their parents did, most of those chores are still shouldered by women. Is there a way to prevent everyday skirmishes over home front responsibilities from escalating into full-scale wars — and still get him to put the dishes in the dishwasher? Let’s look at both sides of the problem.

Her side
  • “I’m tired of doing all of it all the time.”
  • “It’s the psychic energy that’s so draining. I have to be responsible for things even if I’m not in charge of them.”
  • “How come he can fix a car engine but can’t figure out how to put the toilet paper on the roll?”
His side
  • “When I do the grocery shopping, she says I buy the wrong tomato sauce.”
  • “She’ll find one spot of food on a pot and yell, ‘Is this what you call clean?’”
  • “The fact that I can’t remember to put my socks in the hamper is not a personal attack against her. I just…forget.”

Even the best counselors don’t have a foolproof recipe for success on this one. But here are a few suggestions. Try them; you never know…

Figure out exactly what needs to be done and who’s doing it. Keep a log of everything for a week down to the minute details: Who walked the dog, who did the laundry, who folded, who took the car in for repair, and so on. It could well be that a spouse is doing more than you gave him or her credit for. In that case, make a point of appreciating each other’s efforts. By not taking the chores, large or small, for granted, you create a spiral of appreciation that, in time, can erase resentment.

Talk about how things were done when you were growing up and what role models you had for sharing the work at home. If Mom did all the cooking, you may both hold the expectation that planning and cooking meals is only a woman’s job. Some women also feel that if their husbands earn more than they do, they don’t have a right to ask for help at home, even if they work, too. But as gender roles shift, and more women as well as men move in and out of the workforce, those expectations must change, as well. Talking about what you each expect and want is essential to balancing the scales.

Consider various plans for a fair division of labor. Maybe you go with a scenario based on expertise: Who excelled in math? Put that person in charge of the checkbook. Depersonalize the process, as if you’re tackling something with a colleague. What’s one way to solve the problem? What are five other possibilities? Who else could help with this problem? Perhaps hiring a neighborhood teenager to handle some chores, errands, or childcare would lighten the load for both of you.

Let go. Sometimes, when it comes to housework and children, women are their own worst enemies. You asked Daddy to dress the baby and the kid comes out with a top and bottom that don’t match? So what? You wanted him to do the shopping? Then let him do it his way. The principle here is simple: If you give up responsibility for a chore, you have to give up control over it, too. Besides, some things just aren’t worth quibbling about.

When all else fails, go on strike. It has been duly noted that some women have simply stopped doing domestic duty to make a point. Laundry? Wash and dry only yours. Kids need something bought or signed? Tell them to ask their dad. As long as things keep getting done, he may not realize how much, and in what detail, you actually do. Only when you stop will he get the hint.

Train your kids. Instead of fostering helplessness in the next generation, make sure your children, boys as well as girls, grow up believing that sharing the physical as well as the emotional chores at home is just what considerate people do.
