1 Egg (excellent protein treatment) (no egg if you are

1 tsp of Macadamia Nut oil (or grapeseed, almond, jojoba)

1 tbsp of honey

Easy Hair Conditioning Mask

1 very ripe Avocado pitted

1 Egg (excellent protein treatment) (no egg if you are
protein sensitive)

1 tsp of (Extra Virgin Olive Oil)

1 tsp of Macadamia Nut oil (or grapeseed, almond, jojoba, evoo -
{extra virgin olive oil})

1 tbsp of honey

Leave on hair for 30 minutes or longer with a plastic cap or a

4. Since hair is protein, a diet that is too low in protein may
cause some thinning in hair or retardation in the growth cycle. Some
conditioners contain proteins; when too much protein is put on the hair, either
every week or every two weeks it can leave the hair very hard and brittle. Try
to limited protein to the hair at least once a month. Especially if your diet
is rich in proteins!

Chattanooga’’s First Natural Hair Care Products Store Opens

Maneland Hair Nursery  announces the opening of its specialty hair products store on Saturday, October 22nd and Sunday, October 23rd at 12:00 p.m. at the Parkway Offices,  5113 Hwy 58 Ste. 215.  The Grand Opening will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 12, 2011.

Special guests participating in the grand opening include Pamela Jenkins, owner of Koils by Nature, a product line whereby all ingredients are from nature, including natural butters, oils and certified organic essential oils.

Products available during the grand opening include Afroveda, BeeMine, Curly Kinks, Darcy’s Botanicals and Komaza Care.  The store will highlight these and other products hand-crafted by women who have been inspired from personal experiences managing their own hair.

Maneland Hair Nursery will be open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 7:00 p.m.  Product consultations and volume purchases are available by appointment Monday through Friday.

Easy Hair Conditioning Mask

1 very ripe Avocado pitted

1 Egg (excellent protein treatment great for color treated or if you apply heat) (no egg if you are protien sensitive)

1 tsp of (Extra Virgin Olive Oil)

1 tsp of Macadamia Nut oil (or grapeseed, almond, jojoba, evoo)

1tsp of Jamaican Black Castor Oil

1 tsp of coconut oil

Make sure the the avocado is very ripe,  it will be very soft to the touch; pit & skin the avocado and mash the avocado in a small bowl; add egg, and oils; mix first with a spoon and if you have a hand blender; use it until everything is blended and smooth.

Generously apply mixture to your hair (double the recipe for longer hair) leave on your hair for 20-30 minutes; process under a hooded dryer with a plastic cap or

After watching this video, it brought back very painful memories for me, growing up dark in the south!  My first memory of the difference of color is when I was 5 years old and because of my late birthday, I was not in school yet and my paternal grandmother used to keep me while my parents was at work.  At that time, my great-grandmother was in a nursing home and the days we would go and see her; my mother would dress me up….why I had no idea.  So on this particular day we were going to see my great-grandmother in the nursing home, I had on a pink lace dress, white tights and patent leather black shiny shoes; my mommy put my hair in 6 ponytails and dropped me off to my grandmother’s house; before leaving, my grandmother had to retwist my ponytail for some reason; and she told me “you too dark to have such pretty hair” at 5 I really didn’t know how to process this……I looked at my skin and looked at hers (she was darker than I was) and shrugged it off; BUT that statement did something to me that day….it took the blinders of color off! Before she said that to me, I ONLY knew of black people and white people…..I did NOT see the different shades of black….I went home that day I saw my mommy was a different complexion than I and I asked her why?  She told me I was beautiful no matter what complexion I was…this reassured me, but still…..the blinders were off and insecurities set in…I KNEW it was negative at 5 years old!  I don’t blame my grandmother for what she did….she was born and raised in a Jim Crow South and I could not imagine the life she lived backed then! I love her and had the most respect for her; may she continue to rest in peace!

By the time, I was a freshman in high school I was 6 feet tall, skinny, and BLACK!  None of the boys liked me like “that”, because one I was taller than most and two I was dark…  I was cool Pam, funny Pam, my girl Pam!  I would get weird complement/insults like “you are so pretty to be so dark” ; “you’re that smooth pretty black” and “you are a pretty dark girl”  WHAT???  My mommy would tell me that I was just pretty……so this stuff was confusing to me!

Going to Europe at 19 was the BEST thing in the WORLD for me and my blackself!!  In Europe, they see you as BLACK PERIOD, there is no light skin dark skin mess! That is the direct result of slavery and what and the Willie Lynch syndrome did to us and what some of us pass on to our children unbeknownst to them!!!  I was told I was beautiful by all races and nationalities……in Paris I was beautiful, in Spain I was beautiful, in Germany I was BEAUTIFUL!!!  ONLY Black Americans, in Europe told me I was “pretty to be so dark”!!   When 3 black women of different complexion walks into a room; other races will see 3 black women;  most black people will see the difference in our complexions! I fell in love with myself and my beautiful black skin in Europe….the blinders were put back on for me!  I see Black People as one again….not as different shades of black, but just BLACK! Because that is how the WORLD sees us and this how we have to start seeing ourselves!  I TRULY love the beautiful black skin that I am in!

PS – if you are not of a darker complexion….you would not truly understand.

• Take a walk. America is in the midst of an obesity epidemic, which is slated to only get worse over the next decade. An extra 20 minutes of physical activity a day, or an additional 2,000 steps, is all we need to avoid weight gain, according to Dr. James Hill, obesity researcher and co-founder of America on the Move. How do you know how many steps you’re taking? Clip a pedometer to your belt and get moving! Everything from walking the dog to grocery shopping counts.
• Eat an apple. Apples contain 15 percent of the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C. In addition to contributing to overall health, fruits rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant, have recently been linked to a decreased risk of coronary heart disease and cancer. Fit two to three servings (or more) of fruit into your daily diet.
• Say no to trans fat. Like saturated fats, trans fats raise total cholesterol and LDL, the “bad” cholesterol levels. Trans fats also lower levels of beneficial HDL cholesterol in the body. Additionally, consumption of trans fats may inhibit the absorption of healthy fats that are necessary for the growth and functioning of vital organs.
• Go easy on the booze. This means an average of one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. (A drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 4 ounces of wine, 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits or 1 ounce of 100-proof spirits.) Drinking more than moderately can increase the risk of such dangers as alcoholism, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, breast cancer, suicide and accidents.
• Get a doggie bag. Portion sizes in restaurants and fast-food chains have exploded in recent years, and many of us just can’t help but clear our plates. Ask for a to-go container when you order. That way you can pack up half your entrée to enjoy the next day.
• Have a yogurt. It’s no secret that calcium helps keep bones strong, but there’s more reason than ever to eat yogurt for bone health. Some yogurt brands now contain inulin, a naturally occurring, fiber-like carbohydrate that’s found in fruits and vegetables. Inulin has been found to increase the activity of live cultures and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. Best of all, it aids in the absorption of calcium.
• Take your vitamins. A study in the Journal of Nutrition showed that taking a daily multivitamin reduced the risk of a first heart attack in both men and women. Authors of the study think this effect is due to the B vitamins found in multivitamins, as well as the antioxidant vitamins, C and E, selenium and beta carotene. Vitamin supplements are no substitute for the nutrients you get from food, but they’re a good way to cover your bases.
• Hold the salt shaker. Excess sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure (hypertension). More than 50 million Americans — or one in four — have high blood pressure and a third of them don’t know it. High blood pressure contributes to the risk of heart and kidney disease and stroke. Use fresh herbs to boost the flavor of the foods you cook — you’ll get lots of delicious flavor, without the sodium.
• Switch to whole grains. Whole grains are richer in nutrients and fiber than refined grains. Whole grains help keep you regular, too. Reach for whole-wheat bread over white and brown rice over white. Popcorn and oatmeal are whole grains, too.
• Hit the water cooler. Water is important for all metabolic processes in the body. It also helps with digestion and weight loss and improves the appearance of your skin. Drinking eight to 10 8-ounce glasses of water each day is key, but eating foods with a high-water content (like fruits and vegetables) also will contribute to your water intake.

7 Ways You Can Donate!

The death toll from the catastrophic tornadoes in the South has climbed to more than 340, with thousands injured, homeless, without power or clean water. How can we harness the power of social media to help?

One of the best things you can do is use Twitter and Facebook to spread the word about places to donate and how to help. Here’s a list of ways to help get you started:

The Red Cross has two shelters set up in Tuscaloosa, temporary homes to 240 people so far. The relief organization provided meals for more than 600 people on Friday and is requesting more financial support. Donate to the Red Cross online RedCross.org, text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10, or call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) to give money or schedule a blood donation.

The Salvation Army has spread out all over the South, helping with sustenance for tornado survivors in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Donate on the Salvation Army’s website at salvationarmyusa.org. Text “GIVE” to 80888 to make a $10 donation, or you can call 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769) and designate “April 2011 Tornado Outbreak”.

Save the Children is providing food, doctors and education for kids, and the organization is accepting donations at the Save the Children website. The organization will also accept donations by phone at 800 728-3843 during business hours.

World Vision, a Christian humanitarian group, focuses on children, aiming to lessen the emotional shock from the devastating tornado outbreak. Find out more or donate at the World Vision website, or call 1-866-56-CHILD (24453).

Catholic Charities are accepting donations for tornado victims at the Catholic Charities website, or you can donate by calling 1-800-919-9338.

Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund is accepting donations on its website, requesting donations by credit card or check.

Post found items to Facebook: Patty Buillon started a Facebook page containing found pictures and items that were blown by the tornadoes. She started that page after finding pictures and documents in her neighborhood that were blown all the way from Smithville, Mississippi, a town located 100 miles to the Southwest of her home. If you live near the disaster area and find photos, mementos or other items, scan them or take photos of them and post them to the Facebook page she created specifically for this purpose, entitled “Pictures and Documents Found after the April 27, 2011 Tornadoes“. There are now more than 600 photos and items on the page, with 40 of them already identified.

Please, pick your favorite charity, let us know in the comments of other organizations that are helping the South’s tornado survivors, and post on Facebook and tweet the information of your choice far and wide. This is the second-worst storm in recorded history, and people are suffering right now. We need to help them.

• Having a healthy diet is a key factor to stopping hair loss and promoting hair growth. Depending on your schedule it may be tough to adhere to some of these standards, but most are easily followed once you make a conscious decision to stick to the plan. Some key dietary points to note:
• Eat a solid amount of fresh fruits and vegetables everyday. Leafy greens (e.g. lettuce) and sweet juicy fruits (e.g. melons) are especially good, and fruits that are ripe are easier to digest.

• Be sure to consume an adequate amount of protein everyday. Protein is required for all cells in the body to grow, including hair cells. Lean proteins and low-fat milk or yogurt are best, as they are easier to digest. Animal proteins (i.e. dairy, meat, seafood) are especially beneficial because they are complete proteins, in that they contain the eight essential amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own, but are required for protein synthesis and muscle growth. Proteins are also a good source of B-vitamins and zinc.
• Eat several servings of whole grains everyday. They are easy to digest and also contain biotin, silica and iron, which are essential to maintaining healthy hair. Brown rice and lentils are great options, and are also easy to incorporate into one’s diet.
• Try to incorporate seeds and nuts into your diet. They can be eaten as a snack or with a meal. Seeds and nuts (e.g. walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds) provide essential fatty acids which are vital for promoting hair growth.
• Include spices in your meals. Spices help the body to absorb the nutrients from the foods that you eat. These nutrients are essential for promoting hair growth. Some everyday options include parsley, oregano and black pepper.
• Cut down on processed foods. These foods usually do not contain much in the way of nutritional value, and they also contain additives, which help give it a long shelf-life but can have a negative impact on the body.
• Have a multi-vitamin and a time-release Vitamin C tablet everyday. A daily multi-vitamin is important because even with a great diet, it is hard for the body to receive all the vitamins and minerals that it needs in order to promote hair growth. Vitamin C helps the body to repair the small muscle tears that occur when you exercise (which is also a key part of my program). If the body has to worry about repairing muscle tears, it cannot concentrate on growing hair.
• Stay hydrated. Be sure to drink enough water to keep the body replenished, but sipping water every fifteen minutes is unnecessary. Eight to ten glasses of water a day is a good target to keep the body hydrated. Please keep in mind that fruits and vegetables are largely composed of water, and can also be used to reach the recommended hydration level.

• Exercise is just as important as a healthy diet when it comes to growing your hair back. Exercise helps to reduce stress, which often contributes to hair loss. Increased stress levels constrict the blood vessels which supply blood to the scalp. If the blood flow in the scalp area is insufficient, the scalp cannot receive the nutrients that it needs in order to promote hair growth. Some important points to remember:
• Don’t stress out. Constantly thinking about losing your hair is stressful and will only cause you to lose more hair. Instead, focus on what you can do to stop the hair loss and direct your energy towards improving your lifestyle.
• Create a tri-weekly weightlifting routine. There are a couple of essential exercises which should be incorporated into your routine. Crunches help to make the body’s core strong and will help you to perform all other exercises with proper form. Squats work some of the body’s largest muscle groups and help to release a large amount of growth hormone, which helps all the muscles that you exercise to grow. Lifting weights also releases endorphins, which help to put you in a positive state of mind. The endorphins are very helpful when trying to deal with something that seems impossible to change, such as hair loss.
• Practice yoga twice a week. Yoga classes are offered at most health clubs and there are also a number of very good DVDs in circulation. A comprehensive yoga session will take you through a variety of poses that workout the entire body. Yoga helps to put you in a more relaxed state of mind, and also makes the body’s muscles more flexible.
• Try to do some form of aerobic exercise twice a week (e.g. running, treadmill). Aerobic exercises also help the body to release endorphins.
• Always breathe deeply. Deep breathing purifies the blood and helps it to carry nutrients and oxygen to the cells of the scalp, which in turn help to promote hair growth. Breathing deeply is also a great stress reliever.
• Get an adequate amount of sleep. As someone who often works eighty hour weeks, I know that getting six to eight hours of sleep per night can be almost impossible. If you don’t have enough time to get that much sleep everyday, ensure that whatever sleep you do get is in a comfortable environment. Sleep is a great stress reliever and also helps to clear the mind.

How long have you been thinking about going natural?
-Before I started my transition, I tried to go natural the summer before my transition but it didnt work out because I wasn’t serious enough about it. I just wanted something different and less damaging to my hair. After I started researching natural hair care, watched Youtube videos, and went to websites like Curlynikki then I seriously considered going natural!

When did you BC and after how long of a transition?
-I BC’d August 7, 2010 after transitioning for 2 months during the summer.

How did you feel after all the relaxed hair was cut off??
-I felt free!! I went to my long time hairstylist to get my BC and then I went home and cut some more off because I still saw alot of relaxed ends. The fact that I completed my BC myself gave me strength and confidence in my new look!

What was your family’s reaction?
-My family was in shock I think, they didn’t really say much about it. My mom did tell me “not to leave my hair standing on top of my head”, lol whatever that means. My fiance loved it, he supports me in anything that I do so I wasn’t surprised about his reaction.

Who, if any was your inspiration?
-I don’t think I had a specific person who inspired me to go natural… but after watching YouTube videos of various women doing their BCs, transitioning, styling their natural hair, and sharing their natural hair experiences, that was enough inspiration for me to start my journey!

What products do you use?
-My hair loves water, when my hair was relaxed I used to RUN from water, now I just let my tresses soak up that moisture! I really like Giovanni Smooth as Silk conditioner and VO5 Tea Tree Conditioner. My new fave is Koils By Nature Leave In Conditioner and Nourishing Body & Hair Butter in Mango. I’ve used Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Cream ever since my BC but Im trying out new things. - I don’t have any children. When I do have children, they will all be natural

What have you learned from this experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life?
-I have learned that Natural Hair is BEAUTIFUL! There’s no need to cover up the person that God has made me to be. I have also learned that what works for someone else may not work for me, so it’s important to always keep that in mind. Natural hair is sooo versatile, one day I can rock my TWA and the next I can rock a twistout. I love it!
